If the numbers I am looking at are accurate, I may not even take on Wells' contract if Lincecum was coming back in return. Those numbers make Lee's contract look reasonable. As far as Pence going out in any deal, it would hurt but if the return is good enough, I'd consider it. I wouldn't do that specific deal simply because of Wells' contract.
Duly noted, but in my defense may I present into evidence the following mitigating circumstances: Exhibit A) Cards:Jazz::colonoscopy:urethral catheter Exhibit B) Hendrick's gin Yippee ki-yay Mister Falcon.
well i'd suspect that the jays would pay a sizable chunk of it, but yeah, i can't imagine drayton would pile on the salary like that anyway. would somehow have to acquire a RF stopgap for the rest of the year if we unloaded pence. seems like it would be tough. alright i'm done for the night. great series, stros.
You picked a heck of a game to go to. I only go to a few games each year. In 2005, I had relatives in town from Cleveland and decided to shell out for tickets to what would end up being that epic 18-inning game against the Braves. I had to convince everybody to stay around the 13th inning. They're all Indians fans so the heat wasn't worth it to them. I felt bad initially but it ended up being worth it. I'll never forget this young Braves couple sitting across the aisle from me. They were both literally crying, particularly the girl.
I know I may be in the minority, but I hope we just stand pat and don't really do anything come the trade deadline. I would just like to compete with what we have, that way we don't lose anything from the farm system that we are trying to build back up, plus we compete at the same time. However, the only trade I would make would be to trade Val for a few prospects. Then throw Hawkins into the closers role, (Not really read to put Arias into the closers spot). That way you have Hawk closing, and Sampson/Arias/Brocail to do the late inning work. But at the end of the day, I wouldn't mind keeping Val especially with the way he is pitching right now, if we are still in it at the deadline.
How could the heat not be worth it to them when the roof was closed? Seems like a comfortable afternoon to me..and it was since i was there as wel.
This was definitely set up to be a good game and didn't let down. You just couldn't go wrong with the pitching duel, Oswalt vs. Carpenter. This game definitely played out a playoff game and reminded me so much of the most recent good years when we'd played them in NLCS. It's crazy how that was five years ago. I just hope we don't let up and look to move up in the division and get 1st.
I havent watched an Astros game all season till today lol and wow was it impressive! Im hopping on the bandwagon now lol...
I'm with you there. We've been winning for two months now with the talent we have, I don't want to deplete what little talent we've been able stock up recently.
Been feeling that way too. The only way I'd welcome a trade is if it's for someone that will be here awhile. No 1-2 year rentals.
Agreed, I'm not trading what depth has been developed in the farm system over the last 2 years for a 32 y/o pitcher who will want a $20 million per year deal after next season. This team would do well to bring in another Randy Wolf like acquistion as they did last year. No need to break the bank for a big name player, a #3 starter is all this team needs with Wandy and Roy pitching like #1s right now.
once again, if it's a 1-2 yr rental, we'd get something in return on his way out. isn't the goal to win a world series? the clock on roy, lance, lee, and tejada is ticking. do you really envision a bud norris and jason castro-led team having a better shot at getting us a ring in 3-5 years than this team plus halladay would now? you gotta go for it while it's there to be got.
there really is good logic to this. but it all depends on the cost. the blue jays keep talking about what it will take to get a deal done...but notice, they haven't made a deal yet.
I think the only way we get someone like Halladay would be a last second deal like RJohnson and steal him away from another contender. I would bet on a move but something under the radar like Wolf along with an August move like Hawkins!
I don't think one single player is going to make much of a difference with this particular team. Right now they are playing great baseball. But make no mistake, this team is playing a little bit over their heads as it is. I hope they continue to, I'm sure loving it. But I just don't think it's worth it at this point to sacrifice the future. I wouldn't mind seeing a Wolf-type move like others have said. You maybe give up a few prospects that didn't quite figure into your plans anyways, if Wade plays it shrewd. And even if you don't resign him when his contract is up, you'll still feel it was worth it. Both Wolf and Valverde are good examples of that. But a Halladay...like I said, if we have to give up every good piece in the farm we have for him, then I want to see him signed long term. Otherwise it doesn't make sense...this organization is still working to recover from all the prospects we gave up in last ditch attempts to win it all. All those last ditch attempts and we still haven't won IT.
I have read several experts are predicting lots of August movement this season. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Astros make some sort of move then unless they do a complete 180 and fall off the charts.
If 1 single player doesn't make a difference.. why in the world would you get a Randy Wolf type player? That's just a waste of even mediocre talent. If you really believe that 1 elite player doesn't do much for this team...how could an average player do anything more than keep you afloat? On Halladay..he's not a FA after this year. I believe there's no negotiation with him prior to the trade (not sure if that's Roy's rule or the Blue Jays'), but you'd still have all of next year to extend him..
We might need more pitching now the "Media" is reporting the Stros about to place Puma on the disabled list...THAT SUCKS
It's hard to find a city more cursed than this one, as far as sports. It's unbelievable. Every time the Rockets make a run, we know what happens. Now, the Astros finally creep back into things, make an enormous statement to get the entire city excited again... and an injury that was initially 2-3 days, then followed by an MRI which confirmed 2-3 more days, will turn into a three-week (at a minimum) absence. Are you kidding me?
