Great points, and you are right. I guess all I can say is, like the disclaimer I tried to put up, my premise was very simple minded and hypothetical. Using sophisticated models to determine the relationship between my variables would've been too much work, so I just used a linear relationship. The correctness of this is unproven and I used it only for arguments sake. However as you aptly pointed out, without establishing this the end result is wholly unreliable and invalid. However we can still speculate, since this was not meant to be a scientific study, but just that: speculation.

Not a win-loss prediction for the upcoming season, but yes I need a win-loss constant. Which was the par wins that I attempted to extrapolate.

Realistically, you can throw out any team that has bloated payrolls due to bad management decisions, hell throw out any non-successful club. You don't want to measure yourself against failures.

    Awesome thread.

This is a good indicator to see how wisely the rockets are spending their money.

The only X factor is injured payroll... but you can't count that really because it is a dumb luck thing. Just go with active payroll.

I think a lot of you are being way to hash on the OP. He brings up an interesting enough topic, did a fair amount of research, said it is light hearted and admited to flaws. Why the hate? Grasp the concept that he is not trying to predict the number of wins, he is trying to point out that we are getting our money's worth. Some people are better shoppers than others and basically he is saying that Morey is a good shopper.

Also he started with a very good description of the intentions of moneyball. If you have not actually read Moneyball; 1) you should and 2) you should not be responding to this post until you do. Trust me, you'll thank me later, it is a suprisingly entertaining book.

The big mistake he made was not saying that this years Rockets are going to be the greatest team in the recorded history of sports. That is how to get stars in this league. Well that and praising Yao Ming!

So assuming that injuries can happen... let's assume every active roster loses its two best players except the Griz... uh ohhhhh... finally!

Exactly. He even put a big disclaimer before he even started his actual thread. Some people take things too seriously. Good thread.
