I know are threads about Odom but there seems to be more information that is leading to Odom bolting from the lakers. Bringing Odom aboard seems to be something that we could do considering we still have the MLE. I think we can even offer then 9 million or so provided that we make some trades afterward. The only negative is Odom is looking for a 5 years deal but I still think Houston can get him. However this will create a log jam at PF and SF, but with that gives us a chance of trading other players to get good center or even getting Gortat without loosing to much talent in Dec. What do you guys think? http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4328376
Not likely but stranger things have happened. Odom could provide some scoring and rebounding for sure and make other players expendable for trades to upgrade us even further.
Aren't we about to spend a significant portion of our MLE on this Andersen guy? Odom is asking for much more than the MLE anyways. How could we possibly afford him?
How much can we offer him? He could really fit our team since we are going to be a quick team. He could also fit Adelman s offense.
if we get a guy like odom, we can trade a few players and try to go after boozer or someone like spencer hawes or a marc gasol and we could dangle landry. Of course the salary's would have to match.
I am not great with the contract rules and all but I have a thought on how we could sign Odom. 1. Brian Cooks contract, buy him out or trade him for a future pick. His contract is worth 3.5 mill next year. I am not sure how long his contract is. 2. Brent Barry, i believe he signed a 2 year contract with us last year, he is due 1.9 mil for next year. That plus the MLE brings us to 9 million? Like i said I dont really understand too much of the business side of all this but it was just a thought.
both cook and berry's contract expire end of this season. It still won't protect us from going WAY over the Luxury tax. we'll end up paying Odom/League over 13 mil!
He would be a great addition, he can rebound, score and he has the ability to pass the ball nicely for a guy his size. But the only problem is that he wants around 9 to 10 million and we only have the MLE available, isn't there a way to drop a contract or maybe trade so we can clear up? (Brian Cook?!)
I kind of laughed off the Odom idea. He is such a disappointing player, frustrating to watch, Rasheed Wallace like in his inability to get his motor running on a consistent basis. However he always excels as a facilitator, rebounder (when a better rebounder plays with him to reduce the rebounding pressure), and is excellent as a 4th option. IMO you never want to count on him to provide scoring, that negates his strengths. Then you mention the Webber thing. I totally see it. Odom is probably the most capable player currently in the NBA at running a high post offense. Adelman hasn't used this type of offense since Sacramento. With Yao out and no pass 1st point guard on the roster maybe its time to reintroduce it. Then work Yao into it when he returns. Or bring Odom off the bench when Yao returns and use the HP-Offense as a deadly wrinkle! And you have the flexibility of playing Odom with Yao and Scola at times. It actually is an intriguing possibility. Maybe Adelman should contact Webber and ask him to persuade Odom to sign for the MLE. Maybe he could sell the HP-PF slot to Odom. Odom can come for the same reason Ariza did, to expand his game and feel "wanted". You forget about your 2010 free agent aspirations, work the offense this year and get it crisp, trade McGrady for the best possible asset, cross your fingers and hope Yao gets back, and take another shot.
Please forgive my ignorance and I'm sure that this has already been addressed, how is Andersen going to be paid? Is it from part of the MLE? I'm asking this in relation to the comments about us having some money to sign Odom, who does not have the mental strength to play on a weak team like the Rockets.
Odom is about to turn 30 and is injury-prone. All that sugar he consumes probably contributes to his lack of motivation and inconsistent play. He's a super role player on a good team but pointless for a rebuilding team. Even if we could find a way to afford him, I don't think it makes any sense.
We're over the salary cap. Even if you somehow removed Cook's and Barry's salaries, we'd still be over the cap. The only way to offer Odom $9 Mil is to be under the cap. It ain't happening. Plus, if you're under the cap, the available salary exceptions count against the cap. This means that in order to give Odom $9 Mil, you'd have to be at least $9 Mil under the cap (if not more).
we already are deep in SF and PF's. don't see him working on this team even if we could get him. he's very inconsistent as well.
