So I have a buddy that swears he could hit a home run into the Crawford boxes. My friend is a relatively athletic guy but has never had any formal coaching in baseball at all.

I think it would be very difficult because you have to have a decent amount of strength and coordination but you also have to be able to hit a 70-80 mph pitch which is hard enough for the average guy.

    What do you guys think?

Professional golfers often hit 320 yard drives. I hit 320 yard drives.

Does that mean I could hit a home run? You can't tell in batting cages.

    :)

Will: Beethoven, okay. He looked at a piano, and it just made sense to him. He could just play.

Skylar: So what are you saying? You play the piano?

Will: No, not a lick. I mean, I look at a piano, I see a bunch of keys, three pedals, and a box of wood. But Beethoven, Mozart, they saw it, they could just play. I couldn't paint you a picture, I probably can't hit the ball out of Fenway, and I can't play the piano.

Skylar: But you can do my o-chem paper in under an hour.

Will: Right. Well, I mean when it came to stuff like that... I could always just play.

If it's a pitching machine and the balls are coming at 70 mph, I can knock one out. I'm 5'10", 160 lbs.

Are you saying he's never played baseball? Because if he hasn't I would say the chances are zero.

With one of the new technology metal bats, yes, I think I could. I can hit a slow pitch softball out of the park (300'). I think I could get an additional 20' with a baseball, a great bat, and a faster pitch.

Average Joe will have trouble hitting a 75 mph pitch.

I think I could. I've played and coached enough baseball to know how to swing. I've hit several home runs on a high school field. It would just be a matter of getting my timing down.

Of course, I'd have to be using a Demarini bat.

I can tell you I can't even with an aluminum bat. I know I can hit a HR on a middle school field on a soft toss, but barely. I go into the fast pitch of a batting cage(not sure how fast it actually is), and my first time through I'm lucky to hit 1-10. It gets easier as you go along. I say your buddy would get tired before he ever got the timing right to hit the ball well.

I played in junior high and a couple years in high school...played tennis in high school and college, so although hitting a ball with a bat is different, I have quick enough reaction time to pull an ~75 mph ball.

Im not saying I'd knock everything out of the park, but I'd say that if I was getting fastballs right down the middle, I'd knock one out every 30 or so pitches.

I also think that most guys that are semi athletic can do it with practice...now, facing a pitcher that has a number of different pitches...game over.
