I don't know if any of you guys are sweating this, but Phil Ivey, who has already won 2 bracletts this year at the WSOP, is sitting in 4th Place (little over 6 million chips) with 60 players remaining. I know that people see him as THE greatest player living, but this certainly would cement that status, right? Who's better, Phil Helmuth's 11 bracletts, or Ivey's 8, and possibly 3 this year alone.
Whoever wears a Rockets Steve Francis Jersey has my respect. BTW when do they start televising the 2009 WSOP?
Maybe because there was a discussion about how they turned away lots of people from the main event who had $10,000 in their hand. Or maybe it was a thread about how he played in the Main event. There are lots of reasons why this thread could be spoiler free.
Someone is going to post a thread here about how they turned away people from the main event...almost two weeks after it happened.
You won't know who is going to win till november like last year, but I am sorry if I spoiled it for ya. I still like to see the hands even when I know that Phil won't get knocked out, it doesn't spoil the excitement for me, it just gives me more incentive to watch it.
That's funny, because he's been proving people like you who said the game has changed and passed him by quite wrong for the last few years. Hellmuth's game is tailor made for the large weak fields of the WSOP these days. Check his results for the last few years..
How can you say he shouldn't even be in the discussion for best poker player? Sure he tends to struggle against the bigger names and only wins in NLHE, but when you have 11 bracelets you have to at least be discussed. 11 World Series bracelets is a lot. You can't overlook it.
To the OP, I think Phil Ivey's 8 bracelets are better because they came in a a variety of games and has certainly done it in a shorter time frame than Hellmuth. Oddly enough though, Ivey's never won one in Hold'Em so a win this year in the ME would definitely cement it for me.
Meh Hellmuth isnt great, he just b****es about everything and thats exactly why he sucks these days, because he doesnt play aggressively enough has most of the current poker player these days
He's quite good... and quite a tool. I don't know about the greatest, but it seems these days people know no bounds ot their donktitude. He complains because there are so many terrible players playing among professionals these days that statistically it is ruining the game as people know it. What was once purely a game of skill sprinkled with luck has nearly devolved into a massive game of truth or dare slots. Beating a few donkeys at a small ring game or tourney where you hit some cards and make a few good reads? Not so tough. Slaying every donkey that comes around the corner these days in a field of thousands? different story. I do think he's handled the transition poorly though, emotionally. Not that he ever seemed to handle much with any tact, but a lot of that is part of the act too, I think.
Nah... Sorry if that came across harsh. I clicked a link last year to see a picture of friend who played in a small beginning tournament at the WSOP in 08 and the top of the thread was a giant banner that announced the winner within minutes of it happening. I was a little cheesed off and I guess it reminded me of that. I know Norm McDonald will be happy since he picks Ivey every year.
