I suppose it's true that Mac OS can be more in tune with Apple's CPU architecture, but that doesn't necessarily make the software (which is what viruses attack) more secure.
Regardless the only Desktop I can truly recommend for that price range is a Dell. Sony's are great but too expensive. And make sure you get Windows 7. I run it on my Mac and it works great.
Anyway, back on topic... The one thing I've found crappy about manufactured computers (Dell, HP, etc.) is that they lack memory. However, a decent amount of memory (2GB) bloats their price, too, unnecessarily. My suggestion would be to buy a system that you know you can add memory onto if necessary. Perhaps 1GB to start, but expandable to 4GB. Dell typically charges double of what it actually costs for memory.
Huh? The video card, CPU, Memory, hard drive, etc. in a Mac are the same parts you can buy off the shelf for a PC. You can buy even better parts and upgrade beyond what Macs give you, as well.
BrieflySpeaking, Just go to Best Buy or something like these guys are saying. Look for something in your price range. Bring its specs back home and compare it with deals you may find online at places like gotapex.com, techbargains.com, etc. If you have questions, post it here. You should be able to get what you need for around $400-$500.
I believe Mac OS was developed specifically for the Apple CPU architecture, so there's probably a stronger relationship between the two than there is with Windows and the x86 architecture (which Microsoft did NOT develop). But again, that guarantees nothing in relation to software security which is what we were talking about.
True, but I was talking about the comment about "parts from the same manufacturer". Maybe he wasn't saying Apple makes it all, and I'm misreading it.
My information may be out-dated as I've made no effort to keep up with Mac CPU evolution. Are they x86-based now, too?
Poor guy try's to ask what kind of computer he should buy and the Mac/PC war begins....welcome to the internet
Hah! They are. So much for RISC processors: http://www.apple.com/imac/specs.html I agree with Dr. of Dunk then: Mac's have the same crap inside them as Windows-based computers do.
Agreed. There's no point. There are no Macs in that price range. Aesthetics are expensive, apparently.
There are. Mac minis are within that range. Given the apparent short of knowledge about computers, he/she may better off to buy a Mac.
buy one from the dell business outlet. better computers than the consumer crap they sell u at best buy etc.
