I just bought a Gateway 16" with a Athlon Dual Core (don't remember the model number) from Best Buy for $470. It runs great and has a numeric keypad on the keyboard, but it'll drain a battery faster than anything.

Please stay away from the HP Tablet PC...They have wireless issues, overheat, and my touchscreen stopped working...Bought a Lenovo Thinkpad T400 instead...Lightyears better and so much more durable!

The Acer Timeline looks really promising. Light, long lasting battery, not gimped like a netbook. I'll be keeping my eyes on that, has it come out yet?

i bought the Lenovo Y430 for 450 dollars before tax and free shipping (through a 3 day sale). you can't go wrong with Lenovo. it's built solid...much than any dell or acer for around the same price.

I'm really leaning towards the MacBook Air over the Acer Timeline because of the portability.

    MacBook: .16 inch and 3lbs
    Acer Timeline: .76in and 4.3lbs

Pretty close, but I need this machine to last me through four years and be reliable because of my patients and their xrays and patient records I will be storing on it, so I'm leaning towards the Apple. Any opinions?

Are you going to be running Windows on both?

If I go with the Timeline, then I will get the Windows 7 upgrade for free. If I go with the Mac, then I'll stick with the Mac OS, but maybe down the line do the VMWare dual OS.

Just found out that the timeline doesn't have an optical drive. Now I haven't used an optical drive in forever except the occasional Pc game. I have a ps3 so I rarely play games on the pc anyway, but it would be nice. More importantly, how would I install things like Ms office and other things I might need for school/work?

I think you are looking at the entry level model (3810), don't look at that. Look at the 14" 4810 or the 4810 15.6". For me personally, it is between the 4810 and Macbook Air. Laptop hunting, so stressful and fun at the same time!

I guess what I was asking was "How are you viewing your patients' stuff"? Is whatever application(s) you're using to view the stuff available on Windows and OS X?

I just got it! There was a crowd around the display today at Fry's. I ended up getting it at Staples. They have the lowest price I've seen for the 4GB SU3500 14" laptop (599). I highly reccommend you get it from there!

definitely tell me how you feel about it. I'm interested in seeing how easy it is to carry around for every day use, and also if there are any problems right out of the box like some laptops have.

Well, I have some bad news. I played around with it for 2 days and the laptop is kind of weird. Sometimes it runs VERY slow, sometimes very fast. The optical drive is a joke, it woukd not burn for me. Also, I don't know about you, but when I pick up laptops, I use my right hand on the the right side. Well, the placement of the optical drive is on the right side. So everytime I pick it up, the drives crunches and makes weird noises. Sorry to say, the Timeline disappointed me. It's going back tomorrow. I purchased the new gen MacBook Pro 13.3" for 996 on eBay after Bing cashback. I think that's the way to go if you can afford it. If not, then maybe I had a lemon? Why don't you go buy it at Staples, then return it if you are not satisfied? They have a 14 day policy without restocking fee. Good luck.

I know you think you can't get a Macbook, and that's fine. For the record, you can get a great Macbook that will last you 4ish years for $949 after the student discount.

As always, I'm more than willing to answer any questions anyone has on Macs. Just email me through the board or come into the Houston Galleria store.
