Could Gortat end up with the Rockets?

    Future Houston Rockets? (AP)

Could the Rockets have found a solution to their center conundrum?

It's merely speculation at this point, but with the revelation that Marcin Gortat, the Orlando Magic's prized backup center, is returning to the reigning Eastern Conference champions, it offers the possibility the Rockets make a move with Orlando.

Quick back story: the Mavericks signed Gortat to a 5-year, $34 million offer sheet last week, but today, despite going against popular opinion, the Magic decided to bring Gortat back.

If you're like me, then you're thinking "what the heck are the Magic thinking?!"

First they (Orlando) give former Dallas Mavericks reserve forward, Brandon Bass, four years and $18 million, then decide to pay a backup over $6 million a season when they have — arguably — the best center in the league who has not succumbed to injury problems.

If Dwight Howard was like Yao in the sense that he was constantly battling foot injuries, then this move has some merit. But Howard is young (23), and has missed only three games in his five-year career.

There has to be a trade....right? There is no way the Magic can possibly keep Gortat and his $6 million or so per year salary on the books. It's nice to have a compotent center, but for six million? It's a bit ridiculious.

Now, since in the middle of July is the time in the NBA calendar in which implausible trade rumors begin to swirl, here's another : the Rockets will make a move to acquire the rights to the 25-year-old.

Wait...take that back. That doesn't seem so likely when you think about it.

    Why?

Daryl Morey wasn't interested in utilizing the full mid-level exception to sign Gorat, and that's likely why despite Morey's presence at Gortat's home as soon as free agency began, a deal never materialized.

Gortat is a nice player, and for the right price he's probably worth it (4 years and $20 million), but it makes sense not to burn the MLE on one guy.

But despite Morey's unwillingness to go for broke and sign the somewhat unproven center, it doesn't necessarily acknowledge that Morey isn't open to acquiring the breakout star of the playoffs.

Let's act under the assumption that Morey and Magic general manager Otis Smith have been in contact following the Mavericks offer to Gortat, and have discussed a possible sign-and-trade (different than the Hedo sign-and-trade).

The Magic would need to match contracts, and considering the Rockets have a trade exception from the Francis-to-Memphis deal, and with the Magic likely needing cap relief with Carter's, Lewis' and Howard large contracts, the Rockets can offer the Magic expiring contracts (Brent Barry and Brian Cook), a young backup center (Joey Dorsey) or draft picks (1st round (lottery protected in 2011), 2nd round pick in 2010) to make this deal worthwhile for the Magic.

But wait a second. This possible "sign and trade" doesn't necessarily make sense. To make a deal work between the Rockets and Magic, the Magic would end up taking on additional salary. Thus, consdering the current economic climate, wouldn't it make sense for the Magic to simply not have signed him, and while letting him go for nothing, but they wouldn't end up taking on any additional monterary obligation.

The answer to that question, would be yes, it wouldn't make sense for them to sign a player and then trade him for nothing of significant value.

However, if the Magic can somehow get a combination of a pick (or two) and a player (or two), then while the Magic would take on a bit larger financial obligation then they probably should, at the very least, they wouldn't let Gortat go for nothing.

One more thing, you're probably wondering if the Mavericks could be bidding against the Rockets in a sign-and-trade for Gortat. The answer to that is a bit complicated. The Mavs can trade for Gortat, but unlike the Rockets, can't yet.

As we learned last year with the Landry-to-Charlotte drama, once the Rockets matched Landry's offer, he wasn't able to be moved to Charlotte for at least a year. So a Mavs-Magic trade for Gortat is possible, but it would have to take place at the very earliest July 13, 2010.

At the present time, this Rockets-Gortat deal is nothing more than internet speculation. It can happen, and considering the Rockets need for a quality center, it's plausible it will happen.

    But for now, we wait.

I saw similar articles and wondered if they could do such a sign and trade but Nike confirmed that no such thing was possible but we could trade for him only after Dec 15th...I would consider it at that time for sure.

While some of the information is incorrect (or not properly researched), I think part of it has merit. I don't think anyone believes the Magic matched Gortat with the intention of letting him play 12 minutes a game for the next 5 years. They did it to be able to get a return on their valued asset. They have a roster to fill and are already over the cap. Their draft picks are going to be late for several years.

This is actually not a bad deal for the Magic in that they can get a pick or two, a backup center more in line with their needs and clear up cap space for next year. Morey probably didn't like the idea of using the full MLE on one player, not the dollar amount itself. Would be a smart move for both sides, and the Magic may have known they have a deal to their liking in place that they can pull the trigger on as soon as December 15th gets here. Of course, Gortat has to agree to the trade for the first year, but after that it's open season and they can trade him to the highest bidder. In that regard, if a team like the Rockets comes knocking, he might be inclined to accept rather than get banished to Sacramento or the Clippers next summer.

I don´t see it that unrealistic, when i saw the magic matching firt thing i thought was, he or bass would be on the trading block.

If you also consider that Von wafer is in the Magic Plans and that we have a spare bigmen in Cook or Dorsey, it is not so difficult to speculate that we are going to sign and trade Von Wafer along with (god help us) Brian Cook in exchange for Gortat.

Let´s be Real, if we manage to sign Wafer for say, 9 millions 3 years, and we trade him along with Landry for Gortat, while being a difficult move to swallow it would also have sense.

What Landry drama? I realize everything that happened with the Bobcats signing him to an offer sheet and then us matching, but when did we try and trade him to the Bobkittens???

If Morey wasn't willing to spend the full MLE on him now...what makes this write think that Morey is actually going to go after Gortat now he's got THAT contract?! And that contract is good for a team that has no proper C, but Morey is NOT going to go after that contract

Since the Rockets will need to pay someone to be a C at the start of the season it makes even less sense to make a trade in December for Gortat and then pay the higher salary that Gortat got via the DAL offer. I am guessing if not Pryzbilla then some PF/C, but Gortat won't happen.

As I tried to point out, using the entire MLE (which was all the Rockets had at the time) was probably the larger hanging point than the dollar amount. And offering that meant that they would have had all of their money tied up waiting for him to sign in addition to the 10 days that the Magic have to match. Meanwhile, any quality free agents are signing with other teams. The Rockets likely would have wasted two weeks and come away with nothing. There is a lot more to being a GM than adding and subtracting.

The Rockets made an offer that they were comfortable with at the time.
They showed their interest in Gortat on the first night and I'm sure they hope he will remember that when they offer a trade to the Magic on December 15.

What I'm not clear on is whether the sign-and-trade restriction only applies to the team that tried to sign the player to the MLE in the first place (in this case, Dallas), or is it for all teams (including Houston).

The assumption on the board is that it is the latter and so Gortat cannot be traded until Dec. 15. The Examiner reporter seems to believe the former.

I think the Rox might give us a Center for XMAS...just have a feeling we will sign Oberto and then trade for Gortat just a feeling.

The author of the article got it wrong. Restricted free agents cannot be part of sign-and-trade at all. The good part for the Rockets is that while anybody can offer a contract, the team that the player signs with will become ineligible for that player's services for one year when his current team matches. Had the Rockets offered the full MLE, Gortat would have signed, the Magic would have matched, and the Rockets could likely cross themselves off the list of potential landing spots for Gortat.

While the premise of the sign-and-trade is wrong, the offer that the author proposes is one that would actually put the Rockets in an excellent position to land Gortat at a later date (December 15 and beyond). There is a lot that can happen between now and then, but I don't think this subject should be completely dismissed.

Gortat could be traded at the earliest on December 15th. Additionally, he is a BYC player. However, Orlando has a huge trade exception from the Hedo "sign and trade", making it easy to trade him in "two simultaneous deals". The team acquiring him would need to send out salaries between 75% and 125% of his salary for this year. Look for him to be moved before the February trade deadline.
