I'm pretty sure it will. Or if you have another computer around that you aren't using, then take the card out of that one and replace it. It's fairly straightforward to install. Open up the computer, unscrew one screw, and pull it out. Replace by plugging in the new one and put the screw in. Install drivers and done. EDIT: Or if you have a wireless router, and want to avoid opening up the computer, buy a USB wireless adapter.
OP, Please try below ways: 1. Check your hardware to make sure your LAN card connected well with the Slot, to make sure your LAN card's connection clean. 2.If you used the different LAN card slot from before, go back to original slot 3.Delete the old driver of LAN Card from device manager then install the new driver If all of above doesn't work, please send me the problem picture of your computer.
Can you give us your computer spec and OS? Is your LAN card integrated on the motherboard or on a PCI? What exactly did you and stipendlax do to try and fix your computer? Are you sure you know exactly the type of LAN that you are using and installing a proper driver?
Some older spyware will insert something into winsock. When you rip it out it leaves a hole. Try this: http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm You can download the program to something (even as small as a floppy) and bring it home.
Dude that's not much helping at all. Best thing is to know what exactly you stipendlax did to fix your computer and that cause the internet not to work properly. It could be anything. But I'm pretty sure it's the driver. Did you guys somehow uninstall the driver during your fix? I mean it's important to have the proper driver for the brand and type of LAN. You just can't install any type of LAN driver for the XP. Do you have some firewall or anti virus blocking the internet?
Best way to install a LAN driver on the XP is NOT to use EXE file. If you can somehow extra the file into a folder. YOu can go into your device manager and search the folder and browse for that file and install it manually.
It HAS to be a driver issue. Initially, the LAN was not installed for whatever reason. Both his IT guy (from his work, I believe) and I got him the driver for that LAN card. It installed. Now, in Device Manager, the LAN shows to be installed, but it's the 'Ethernet Controller' port that's not installed. I tried uninstalling it and re-installing it several times. I tried various other drivers and still nothing. I'm usually pretty servicable with computers, but this one got me stumped. Worked on it for several hours and well... it's got me stumped.
Back up all of his crap, throw in his Recovery CDs to restore the factory defaults. Update his system to lastest patches and configure Windows Update to automatically install updates on his PC. Create an admin account for him and create a local profile for him WITHOUT admin rights. Let him use that one and if he needs to install new hardware, tell him to use the admin account. I did that for my family's PCs and they are always in good shape.
Try the method by installing it in device manager by right clicking on the Ethernet COntroller and search for the driver to where you extra it.
If I remember clearly for XP. With the ethernet or LAN. You need to go into device manager and update the driver for each one of them. One might be install by it won't install for the rest so you might need to manually right click on the individual and update driver.
Oh, we were in the device manager all the time asking it to find new hardware. There were still those stupid yellow question marks all over the ethernet stuff, and they wouldn't go away.
If I had a computer problem that was only dealing with the ethernet card I would just go get a new one. Pop it in and run the CD and you are done with it.
Then you need to right click on the exclamation marks in the device manager and search/browse for the proper driver that you've downloaded. If it doesn't work and still yellow. Then you have the wrong driver. What does the driver say on the working LAN in the device manager? Is it a Marvell Yukon or something else? Is this a Network Adapters just LAN or also a wireless one?
We installed and then uninstalled several different drivers. The computer wouldn't locate any of them. Again, when we would enable the connection, it would say connected for a split second, and then it would look for the IP address and immediately disconnect again. If a new ethernet card rectifies this, I'll just buy one on my way home.
Since the ethernet card you have now is built in, you might have to disable it but you will be able to connect to your network with the new card. The best thing might be to get the new card, then do all the driver upgrades automatically on Dell website or MS website.
