With all the talk about 2010 free agency and where the Rockets fit into the pitcture, I thought it would be a good idea to look at the salary cap situation around the league as well as the lot of free agents that will be available that summer. *There are some obvious inaccuracies in the payrolls below so I was hoping people could edit and update this post with the correct data (I pulled these numbers off HH). *There are likely some names I missed in the free agent lists so add any names you see fit. The picture I'm trying to paint here is that although there are a ton of sexy names in 2010 free agency, after the top 3 or 4 prizes, you are left with a bunch of aging stars that may be looking for more than they are worth at that point. I am also trying to figure out how many teams are legitimate players for those top free agents, at least in terms of available cap space. As teams and players make moves over the next several months (sign draftees to contracts, sign the remaining FAs, make trades, players resign with their current teams, etc...), we can update these lists to get a better picture of what the playing field will actually look like next summer. 2009/10 Salary Cap: $57,700,00 Estimated 2010/11 Salary Cap: $51-57 million? Again, the payroll figures above are likely full of inaccuracies. Right off the top, I know the Utah, Memphis and Clipper numbers are off because of the Okur and Randolph deals. If anybody knows of a site with more updated/accurate numbers, please let me know so I can update the OP. If you see any FAs I should add, let me know about that as well. My goal here is to put every team's 2010/11 cap situation and the upper echelon of the 2010 FA pool in a single post where it's easy to analyze. As payroll/FA situations change, we can update the lists. If you don't wanna help me out... Spoiler ...you are more than welcome to go talk about Bill Artest looking at Kobe Bean naked in the shower.
Wow Portland is SO LOW! I first thought the Rockets were sitting better then almost everyone, and now after looking at it, and stuck with Yao's contract, we look about in the middle...... The FA market does not look that great once you get past the first few names. Just like you said, everyone is aging...... This is going to take three or four years for the Rockets to be contenders again. A sad time to be a Rockets fan...
Portland was built exceptionally well. But Roy & Alrdidge will sign extensions so that number is wrong.
BB, thanks for the OP. Been waiting for a thread like this. Looking at the Blazers, the $12MM for 09/10 is much too low. It should be closer to $35-40MM. If Milsap is added, it goes over $50MM.
Any idea what the luxury tax figure will be with a $51-$57 Million cap in 2010-11? Because I can tell you as a former Hornets fan that George Shinn is not going to pay luxury tax, so maybe an option for the Rockets is a waiting game with New Orleans. A $66 million payroll+New Orleans+a team owned by Shinn = CP3 being available, plausibly and even possibly.
Salary cap is 51% of BRI(Basketball Related Income). If the salary cap is $51-$57 mil, then BRI would be $100-$111.8 mil. Luxury tax level is 61% of BRI. The luxury tax level would be $61-$68.2 mil. reference: http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm
It's not exactly the end of the world if we can't nab a big fish in the 2010 class. There is this Kevin Durant guy in the 2011 class if I'm not mistaken. Then again, his team might be pretty good by then.
Yea, I'm sure it's way off. I'd update it if I knew the right numbers. I just wanted to get a starting point that we can update over time. There are so many discussions about 2010 free agency that I thought putting everything together like this could help shed some light on the realities of the situation and dispel some myths. If anybody knows of a better site for team payrolls or sees inaccuracies, let me know. Or you can just cut the payroll section from the top and update it as you see fit. Just try to make sure you have accurate data if you are going to do that.
