So I have a friend that have OCD since he was in junior high and recently it have gotten worst. He told me that he had to call in sick a few time last week because of the OCD keeping him from coming to work. This is starting to worry me because this guy is a close friend that I known since I was little. Does anyone know where he can go to get help or have any tips for him?

Perhaps he should start with a checkup by his MD and a referral to a psychologist that practices in OCD treatment.

Just get to a doctor and go through a plethora of anti depressants or anti-psychotics until 1 works for him. Also this should have been dealt with a long time ago....... like when he had to wash his hands 37 times before he could his homework.

Once you're OCP, you're OCP for life...

Embrace the Big Wheel and draw your sword.

    OCD? Nevermind.

What part of town are they in?

He is at some point going to have to go to a psychiatrist's office. They will then proscribe drugs and get a psychologist who specializes in cognitive therapy.

Unfortunately, for the therapy to work, your friend will really have to commit to it and believe that he can be ‘fixed’.

If he tries to half-heartedly fix it himself or partially commits to a doctor, the therapy won't work, and he will just become convinced that the problem is irreparable and stop trying.

Good idea, lets keep medicating the population so no one has work through their problems.

Get your friend to a psychiatrist/psychologist, posthaste. OCD severe enough to force one to miss work is not generally something that can be dealt with by the individual.

The next time you have a massive heart attack, I encourage you to throw out all your statins & blood pressure medications, and just work through those problems.

If you don't medicate them, the vast majority are simply are incapable of fixing the problem, no matter how much you push and cajole. At the point they are in full blown OCD, it is pathology, not a simple 'personal problem'. Telling them to do it without medication is like saying schizophrenics should just 'buck up' and "get over" paranoid ideation and voices in their heads.

OCD is pretty uhhh hard to control without the aid of some type of chemical alteration in their brain. Medication isn't the only thing needed of course, but it could help him live his life normalish.

He will say that it's like comparing apples to oranges, lol. Anyone who has ever had a serious personality disturbance knows it's just as dehabilitating as any diease. Not as acutely as say a massive heart attack , but is a serious situation that needs attention

I suffer from mild OCD and Mysophobia. If it is a serious problem for him he needs to see an MD and get a referral to a good specialist.

Mattress Mac's daughter is the spokesperson for OCD. She was in my class in college. Google it.

I used to have mild to moderate OCD a few years ago. I took this medication called Clomipramine and basically cured any OCD tendencies that I had. I am 100% better nowadays. I only had to take the medication for about 3-4 months.

What everyone else has said: referral to a psychiatrist. He ought to get CBT, exposure therapy, etc.

I am curious as to the thought process in posting this question on an Internet basketball BBS. The obvious answer without even asking is to seek medical help. What other answer could you be hoping to hear?

You do know that once your friend gets help, he'll never be able to solve crimes as quickly and easily as before.
