How well has that strategy worked for the Cubs and Rangers?

if you're jealous of the Cubs and Rangers and criticizing Drayton and the Astros relative to them...you MIGHT be missing the big picture.

We avoid shady character guys altogether? Remember Carl Everett? The Astros were the reason his character was repaired enough to continue his career. His rep was not good coming out of New York. Derek Bell wasn't exactly the most pleasant guy all the time either. Billy Wagner could be a real jerk as well, but they kept him for a long time.

What are some examples of guys that the Astros didn't go after that you are quite convinced was because of character issues?

It hasn't even worked out that great for the Cardinals. Pujols is the reason they've been good, and the combination of Dave Duncan/Tony Larussa.

Speaking of Duncan, is this guy some kind of magician? Joel Piniero is looking like an ace recently.
