An apartment actually. And not just plug in lamps, but also ceiling lights, etc. Any ideas?

I would like to know how you setup your house lighting/alarm like a car. It would be so cool to pull up to my driveway and mash a key fob that triggers a loud alarm bleep and makes all the lights in the house flash on/off.

I'm not sure how to do it, but the house I just bought had a remote that controlls the living room fan and light along with the thermostat. It was nice since I would need a ladder to reach it.

    Get a house. lol.

Some examples of automated systems are made by Lutron and Crestron - I have friends that did home theater lighting using Lutron. I almost did it, but then talked myself out of it. A former owner of a company I worked for did his home theater and whole house automation using Lutron lights/controls. He spent thousands just on the lighting.

The only other way I can think of is using something like X10, but that's usually not a "graceful" solution from what I've seen and you seem to want to do light fixtures - I'm not sure what all is available for that.

If you want to get prices, call a home theater installer or an electrician and ask. Also, if you don't own this place, you better ask if it's ok.

Yeah...I'll just wait till I actually own a place. Kinda pointless pumping that money in an apt that I plan on living for only a year.

I have an elaborate string system set up. I can control everything in my home just by pulling on a certain string from my la-z-boy. And, all it cost me was a couple balls of string. I can get a beer from the refrig with a few pulls of some strings. It sure was hell to set up...but it was worth it. :p

I just ran across this product, looks pretty cool:

    http://micasaverde.com/

It uses a technology called Z-wave, which seems to be a better (and more expensive) version of X-10. I've used X-10 before, and found it very unreliable.
