Is this something that you can read and learn about or is it just a case of driving with someone that knows how to do it already and them teaching you?

I learned by having someone in the car with me... and it was fun once I got the hang of it!!! It's a good feeling to know how to drive manual and automatic.

If you know someone with a standard, ask them to take you to a empty parking lot and just drive in circles till you get the hang of it. After I learned how to get out of first gear without stalling, I was okay.

Yep, parking lot is the way to go. And don't try to read anything to learn it, you have to have someone that knows how in the car with you to teach you. It's really not that hard once you get out of first gear.

I learned on a lonely country road in rural Oklahoma on a 77 Chevy Luv! ouch..what a POS!

Learning stick is easy once you get the whole letting the clutch out right thing...Everything after that is gravy.

    I'll admit it. I can't drive a stick.

And here I want to get a really cool, fast car. :(

Yea, I went with my dad a few months back, probably around February. I couldn't get out of first gear though and kept stalling. At first, I thought I broke it. :D It was pretty funny. I'm planning on practicing this summer when he comes back from India in 4 days. Guess what I'm gonna practice on, a 88 Nissan Sentra Coupe. OH YEAH BABY!!!! 4-SPEED ROAD DEVIL!!!!! The clutch is so damn stiff on that thing. I want to get a Lexus IS300 though so I want to practice on this. They have shift-tronic but its just not the same feeling.

i'm 19.. and before i even got a license.. i bought a standard car.. glad i'm did because otherwise i probably would have never learned how to drive one....

it's not that hard once you get the hang of it. for a little while after you first learn you may stall or have your car die every once in a while.. just dont get to embarrassed.. happens to most people as they first learn.. my dad has been driving standard for years and he even has some problems every once in a while when he drives my car after driving his standard truck everyday.. i guess the shifting patterns are a little differnt or something...

i need to try and drive his new truck.. i tried once and it seemed quite a bit differnt than shifting my small car..

Driving a stick all of a sudden made sense when my buddy showed me this:

He told me to watch his left leg as he let out the clutch without stepping on the gas. When the clutch "catches," the car begins to move forward. Its at that point that you begin to give it a little gas. All you've got to do is get used to where it catches to get out of first gear. After that, you'll be tearing through the gearbox in no time.

Good luck. Sticks are way fun.

FWIW, I learned on my 5.0 Mustang which I bought before I could even drive the damn thing. I can't stand driving automatics.
