Someone please explain to me why belts suck so much these days.

Growing up I am not sure where I got belts other than hand-me-downs that were most likely cheap and cheap belts that were bought for me. They lasted forever. They were made of leather. The difference between a cheap belt and an expensive one was style or extra fancy materials added to or in lieu of leather.

Fast forward to 10-15 years ago and I bought a run of belts that mostly did well and lasted a while. Now within the last ten years it seems that every belt I but doesn't last nearly as long. Why? Has the technology of belts changed in such a way that I no longer understand? Did cows evolve in such a way that their dried, tanned, and treated skin no longer holds up to the grueling task of going around my waist and holding up a pair of pants?

I bought about three belts that were useless within 3-5 years. Leather falling apart, buckle falling off, etc. Those were the good belts. The last two have sucked major. In fact my very last belt purchase has taken me over the edge. I decided to spend more money so I could see if that was the new thing - due to the increasing difficulty our society has making a pants-holding-up device, prices have risen and are representative of enhanced skill. I bought a belt on sale where even the sale price seemed like a hefty amount to spend. Stupid thing has begun separating and fading away into nothing within about three months. Really? This is not even an everyday belt.

So, belts are now on my hit list. I need them but I hate them. My soul is consumed by a burning fire of rage whenever I think or use belts. Does anyone else feel this way or has anyone noticed this? Is this a sign that the world is out to get me?

Finally, has anyone purchased a belt within the last five years and thought, "damn, this is a great belt"? If so, where did you get it and how much did you pay?

Oh yes, I just wrote a few paragraphs about belts. How many more times can I use an incarnation of the word "belt". One more, I think. I am sorry you read this. I am sure you feel belted.

Producers make belts that fall apart so you'll have to buy more eventually. They wouldn't be making much money if you only bought 3 for a lifetime.

    Coach leather belts last.

Go to Sak's Off Fifth -- lots of belts that will do fine. I bought a Tumi belt that was on sale big time, and it looks great. I even got a compliment on my belt.

What style of belt do you need?

Most belts are not real leather. I looked for real leather in stores and it is almost impossible to find them. That becomes more true the more expensive the store.

A good belt will also have a contour. When not wrapped it will be curved

    I use these belts

    http://www.miltsparks.com/

They have a long wait time but they are custom made for you. Sized, styled and width exactly how you want it. Also they are technically "gun belts" but that just means they are stronger and last longer. The buckle and leather are strong as heck.

Measure your clothes and get the widest belt you can fit if it can also work with your style.

My belt holds my pants up, but the belt loops hold my belt up. I don't really know what's happening down there. Who is the real hero?

I hate belts because it seems like I a need a different one for every pair of pants I own. I don't know if it is my body, where the different pairs of pants "ride" on my waist, or what, but I'm always having to search for a belt that fits.

    Not a happy belter!

Agreed. But even watch out for the expensive ones. And try to avoid any with tiny screws or little parts that look like the can come off or detach.
