I listened to the audiobook, How to Make People Like You in 90 Seconds or Less, on a drive back to Houston one day. That's where I learned some stuff.
Completely agree. I am shy and introverted just like you OP, but over the years, i've learned to accept myself and be comfortable with who I am. I think being comfortable with myself even helped me meet new people Besides, some chicks like the quiet and shy ones ;]
You pretty much described my situation as well. I'm horrible in large groups and can't bring up anything new, and just stand there smiling and looking like an ass. It does suck and I want to be "normal" as well but I'm working on just accepting the way I am and being satisfied with who I am and trying not to worry too much. I've screwed up my high school life because of my shyness and now I hope to just be myself 100% no matter what in college, next year and beyond. Good luck!
when people talk too much, they are making a complete ### of themselves. it's probably better that you become a better listener rather than a motormouth. people like good listeners, not someone who never shuts up.
Crazy you had to buy a book for this. You shouldnt have to 'make' people like you. Im sure there are qualities in your personality that some may like without you trying too hard.
Hey! That's my line! I use it when discussing religion all the time, as in, "I wouldn't belong to a religion that would have me as a member." Groucho was a genius. Woody Allen stole that line, but it was still funny. Not only funny, but it says what you think about religion in a way ambiguous enough to intrigue whoever you're talking to. Are you sceptical of religion? Are you sceptical of organized religion? Are you a loner? Do you just have a sense of humor? Useful when talking about political parties, clubs, fraternities.. you name it. Wouldn't want to use it too often, but usually good for a chuckle from the crowd and a conversation starter. Of course, waving a cigar around and using a deadpan delivery doesn't hurt. And you can add the bit about Woody stealing it from Groucho. Helps to know which movies those two used it in. In other words, it makes you less predictable, which makes you more interesting and can be a conversation starter, or conversation saver (possibly a convo ender! pick your spots), if you don't want to talk about the subject that came up. Excellent post from bigtexxx. Always amazed when I run across one of them.
