I think this is how you have to look at the situation given Yao's injury and the fact that Tracy will probably be gone after his contract expires. We need to acquire All stars. Top flight NBA players capable of scoring 20-25 points a night. Thats the type of players we are losing now that the Yao/Mcgrady era is over. If teams are offering us anything short of mvp-type players for mcgrady, I see no point in making a deal because if mcgrady returns by the beginning of the season(which is very likely) and helps us win this season, and then leaves, we can use the money to acquire whatever talent is available in FA next off season. The cards are in our hands. That expiring contract is worth more than what teams are offering right now. I guarantee you. And heck, we might get one more good season out of mcgrady. I just read an article on microfracture surgery and they say for younger people with little damage(that includes mcgrady) recovery time is 4-6 months. He had the surgery in late Feburary so he should be ready to go sometime in september if everything goes smoothly. Then he could play and perhaps increase his value before the trade deadline and then we can see what teams offer us. He could be a good rental player for contending teams. I think its best to keep him on the roster for now.
Nothing that would get us a better player than his expiring contract would. With all that money off the books, we can sign one or maybe even two FAs of our liking next offseason. Right now teams want our young players in a package with mcgrady's contract. I say screw that. Our young guys are producing at a high level for us and theyre doing it at bargain prices.
Say we do keep him... How far would we even go without a big man down low and our draft picks would be useless if mac takes up all the mins to carry this team single handedly ... or a single leg for that matter. waiting for his contract to expire is a risk not being able to negotiate a trade in getting a player of his caliber in return.
Without Yao we're not going anywhere next year. I think its best to be patient and keep tmac unless a team offers a deal that doesn't involve us giving up Brooks, Battier or landry, and involves a player better than Joe Johnson, Chris Bosh, or Steve Nash(guys who are FAs in 2010).
I definitely agree with JVGOwnsYou. And who knows how good we'll be if Tmac comes back healthy. Remember the 06-07 season? Yao went down and Tmac carried this team to 52 wins. Obviously he's not the same player, but we also have much better role players.
Keep Him up to the trading deadlineand if He can not contribute by then, Ship him out and get pieces for a push in the playoffs. Hopefully Yao will be ready to play by that time too. So much wishful thinking.
we can't get jack **** for his contract besides larry h. and cat mobely. or ak47's horrible contract. If someone wants tmac, it will be at trade deadline.
