Astronaut Sam Bell is living on the far side of the moon, completing a three-year contract with Lunar Industries to mine Earth’s primary source of energy, Helium-3. It is a lonely job, made harder by a broken satellite that allows no live communications home. Taped messages are all Sam can send and receive. Thankfully, his time on the moon is nearly over, and Sam will be reunited with his wife, Tess, and their three-year-old daughter, Eve, in only a few short weeks. Finally, he will leave the isolation of “Sarang,” the moon base that has been his home for so long, and he will finally have someone to talk to beyond “Gerty,” the base’s well-intentioned, but rather uncomplicated computer. Suddenly, Sam’s health starts to deteriorate. Painful headaches, hallucinations and a lack of focus lead to an almost fatal accident on a routine drive on the moon in a lunar rover. While recuperating back at the base (with no memory of how he got there), Sam meets a younger, angrier version of himself, who claims to be there to fulfill the same three year contract Sam started all those years ago. Confined with what appears to be a clone of his earlier self, and with a “support crew” on its way to help put the base back into productive order, Sam is fighting the clock to discover what’s going on and where he fits into company plans.
Out today at the Angelika Film Center, btw. http://www.fandango.com/angelikafilmcenter_aahng/theaterpage?date=7/3/2009
44 theatres? Man, they should just release it on DVD and Bluray already. My kind of a movie so I want to see it badly.
Finally got to see this tonight, and it was excellent. It actually wasn't what I expected, and in a very good way. I would definitely watch it again. One of the year's best.
If you're a Rockwell fan, I highly recommend Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. Easily his best work in my opinion (although I haven't seen Choke yet).
Funny enough, I was working on setting up my media center PC with all my DVD rips...and here's the screenshot I ended up getting to show a friend.
Saw it yesterday as planned, and while I wasn't blown away by it, I still found it highly intriguing. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who considers themselves a fan of Sci-Fi. Now, a question from the movie...DO NOT CLICK unless you want the ending spoiled for you. Spoiler I warned you...don't click again unless you want to ruin the ending for yourself. I'm serious this time. Spoiler Eventually, sick Sam decided to stay on the moon in the damaged rover, healthy Sam decided to go back to Earth in the Helium-3 pod, and one of the live feed scrambler towers was destroyed to allow the new Sam clone to realize what was going on. I get all that. What I don't get is what the plan was before that. Initially, healthy Sam proposed that sick Sam go home in the Helium-3 pod. But what did healthy Sam plan on doing then? There was some vague dialogue about killing someone...did he mean he was going to kill the rescue team? Maybe the new clone? (but if so, why "awaken" it in the first place?) Can anybody clear that up for me, or at least offer your own ideas?
