Did you read the entire thread? What part of Scola becomes a free agent next Summer do you not understand? If the Rockets want Bosh, it's extremely unlikely that Scola re-signs when he can get more money and more PT somewhere else. Again, because Scola is entering the last year of his contract, trading him is a very real possibility.
Sorry but I don't see it - he feasts on open jumpers, which Yao got him, and being able to post up teams without a true 4 (like he did to Odom) - he is what he is, which is most definitely NOT an all star. What we've seen is what we'll continue to see That's just it though - Scola's not a young piece, he's a veteran player who can take you up the escalator from the level of contender to champion - imagine if he played for Orlando or Cleveland.....He's more valuable to a championship-level team than to a rebuilding one....hence the imperative to strike while the iron is hot.
why do guys think we are rebuilding?? because Yao is out we are rebuilding??? ooo man some are you guys must be smoking something real powerful. Yao Ming out for the season so the Houston Rockets are rebuilding. Artest likely not to return so we are rebuilding. hahahahaha
Not as weak as anybody operating under the delusion that the roster as of today (even if you throw in Trevor Ariza, Gortat, or Pachulia) has a legitimate shot of contending for a title. See, e.g., the post above this one.
That was so sarcastic it looped around and became logically true. Scola will probablyl improve some more this year, with us or not. I dont expect him to be asking for Gasol's 16m, but bigs get paid in this league, and he will be mighty appealing to those that fall short in the 2010 hunt.
I don't consider anyone on the team untradeable at this point considering our injury situations, but like any potential trade idea, who you are getting in return is the key point which must be discussed. Until you start discussing who you think we would get in return it is impossible to say whether the trade would be a good idea or realistic (ie we aren't getting Lebron for Scola obviously). The main problem I see is that Scola is a cheap contract, so what would you hope to get in return when trading him? Most teams with young, improving players with lots of potential to grow who are on contracts similar to Scola's, are also rebuilding. Those teams don't need a 30 year old free agent to be either. Likewise with teams that are likely to have high first round picks next year.
i'm sorry, did you see those dream-like moves he put on aldridge, a true 4? did you see him school some true 4s in international competition v. NBA PFs? the fact that we don't run plays for him is the reason he's not scoring more. if we run more plays for him, he can easily score 18-19 pts on 50% shooting.
Yeah I did - did you know that Aldridge is widely and deservedly known as one of the absolute weakest defensive sieves at the four spot in the league? And it's not like Scola was putting up 30 ppg against him - he was capitalizing on the opportunities given because of the attention being paid to Yao or dribble penetration - that's what good role players do. uh- who cares what happened in an off-season tournament vs. Brazil under a different rule set? We have 2 years of NBA games to figure out what he can do in the NBA. As stated before, most of the time he's able to get open shots because he is a secondary threat due to other players on the floor - if you put the load directly on him his efficiency may go down - and even if it doesn't, so what? 18 ppg from him is enough to get us 40 wins....hooooray. That's a good question, I would imagine you either package him with another larger salary or do an S&T next year, or you take back draft picks. Sure you won't get a high pick since your dealing with a contender but you can probably get a low 1st rounder, - in the dismal scenario with no Yao, no Ron, you can use this to package with your own probable late lotto selection to move into the high lottery, if necessary.
Tanking, huh? Les' ego would never allow it, especially after the positive buzz from last season. Something else to ponder other than the brilliant minds here at clutchfans: Vegas has us at 15 to 1 (12th most likely) to win it all after the news about Yao. http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/blog/ba...t=AvyKveujNTfXOjOqgcuNMM.8vLYF?urn=nba,174375 But obviously they're wrong because we're not going to re-sign Artest and Morey's going to gut the team. Fantasyland.
I'd consider Battier + Scola (My absolute two favorite Rockets since Robert Horry) for Aldridge + Fernandez. Im sure Portland will be in a win now kind of mode but if they get Hedo then they would probably want Brooks instead of Battier. IDK if I do it then. Maybe if they threw in Blake.
Or imagine if we held on to him, and were back to competing in 2010-2011. I think it's more than feasible to accomplish this. And also the reason I'm thinking more and more that it would be a mistake to re-sign Artest. By then we'll either have traded Mcgrady for assets or have that money to spend on a big time free agent (provided we don't overpay Artest or anyone else). Regardless of the route Morey takes to get it done, I'm pretty confident we'll have another all-star caliber talent replacing at least Mcgrady a year from now (and possibly Yao if the worst case scenario happens). When that happens, we'll want a polished Scola paying PF, not an unproven young player/rookie which is all we would fetch at this point.
Getting the BPA realistically speaking for him and also Battier is what DM should look for. I love Luis,he is only second to Yao among the guys that I like. I have to think clearly rather than emotionally about this matter.I wouldn't throw him away for a bad player or a very low 1st rounder/2nd rounder.
Well a S&T next year is something I wouldn't really expect to happen until next year. Taking back a low first round draft pick is better than nothing I suppose, but I think Scola has at least another good 4-5 years of solid basketball in him barring a major injury, especially considering his game isn't based around his atheleticism. So I wouldn't just assume that he is gone no matter what. He will get a pay bump with his new contract, but it is unlikely to be that huge for the same reasons you listed, he is 30 already and not an all star level player. The coming season looks bleak right now, but I think we are in a strong situation to bounce back quickly. Our supporting cast is still very strong and will gain even more playing time and experience this season, so it's a matter of replacing the injured stars with different players rather than gutting the whole team. There is still a reasonable chance that Tmac gets traded for a player who would put us back into contention as well. And of course while all this discussion is interesting to pass the time, we have to remember that regardless of whether we all agree or disagree it is going to have zero impact on what the Rockets actually do. Which is why I find discussing specific trades more interesting than just broad should we trade player x discussions.
That's an unfair assessment considering the fact that Scola is not the focal point of the offense. I think Scola could be an all star if given the touches that Yao usually gets. His percentages are good especially that 12-16' elbow jumper he likes to take. He's a scrappy rebounder who plays hard all the time. Who's to say this team can't contend and make it to the playoffs. If they overachieve they win 43-48 games. We're not out of contention. Look I get it...we are not the Lakers, Cavs, Celtics, Magic or Spurs. Those are the elite teams of next season. Does this mean that all other teams should just cower into a fetal position? NO! We play the games...Life goes on. Give Scola an opportunity to lead this team like he lead Argentina. Give the young guys a chance to play and learn.
You trading Scola may be a possible option but for the here and now of the upcoming season, it is a dumb move. Without Scola we are probably a lottery team. Fan attendance, jersey sales, etc takes a dive. Making the team and Les himself less financially stable as he would be now. I know many on are high on the Rockets signing Bosh, but he can just as easily go to another team. It would be better to keep Scola, at least until the middle of the season where we would know where we are at, since no team would trade a draft pick worth getting for him.
Couldn't agree with you more. Scola is one of my favorite player too. He works hard, plays smart, and brings energy to this team. He still have at least 5 very productive years left as a starter in my opinion. When some people say we are looking toward the future and we should trade anyone that's over 30. I say that's BS. The next 5 years is still the future. I mean, are we looking beyond 10 years ? If we are, then that is moronic. It's stupid to move good and dependable players for players because they are just a few years younger.
There was a reason he got several "best player" accolades from international and European competition. In those games he played with Manu who was acting as a decoy and pg. The Argentinian game was to play Manu and Scola on pnr's, Manu creating plays and driving which almost always ended up with Scola scoring in various places on the court. The jump shots he is given in the NBA is mostly after other options are explored, especially during the fastbreak. I don't know how you can authoritatively say he has reached his ceiling when all the pg's he has played with so far are either average or mediocre passers. Go and watch the video of the past world championships and the olympics before you judge him. You might say that the competion there is inferior to the NBA, however, the Argentine team often kicked the behinds of US teams composed of NBA all stars before the China olympics. Anyway, just watch Scola's team mates and how they played with him in the Argentine team and how he is being utilized in the NBA.
Screw this tanking. We can't give up. I know someone that can help Yao. Remember Yao has alot of heart, and believe me this foot injury he was playing on before the Laker series. See my post in other thread on Yao injury prone. Someone get me to be able to talk with someone in Rockets that can get Yao on the court for the upcoming season. I know a doctor that can get him there and also help is quality of life living with this injury. Please see my other post. I think all options need to be tried and I have a doctor in the area I use and has treated Lance Armstrong that has told me she can heal Yao and he would not need surgery. She is in the local area and if anyone can pass her on to the Rockets and have Yao try it, then I think he could go the therapy route and be back. These things entail Laser Accupuncture, ways of taping the ankle with special type of tape used in the Olympics for healing, and orthodics. I have spine problems myself and she has helped me live and cope with these things. We all remember McGrady had his own special doctor a few years ago and helped him with his back. If anyone hear is connected with the Rockets reply back and I will gladly give the doctor contact information. I think in the position the Rockets are in now with Yao that all things should be explored. The organization doctors don't own these athletes, but like to make it difficult. I would say investing a few months in this to see how it goes, especially since he is not having pain should be tried. Surgery will pretty much make things worse possibly. With the financial commitment involved next year with extension, we need to know now, and also do everything we can to save this season. I feel like everyone is giving up around here, and it really hurts, especially from this organization that has the creed of "Believe It" and Heart of a Champion. Let me know on here who I can get this info to that can get it to Yao. I would be glad to assist in anyway to make this happen.
