So... Gortat wants 5 year $30 million. I am thinking the Rockets deal is more of an length issue rather than per year amount. We'll see how it plays out.

T-yao, thats alot of money to just "throw out." We want to stay flexible to sign FA's in the future...

I wonder if its simply value or if Morey has plans to spent part of the MLE on another player.

Morey has to use the MLE to sign some of the second round picks

thats what he did last year and the years before that

Low-ball everyone to give the appearance of trying to improve, and just roll with the current roster plus a small piece or two.

5 years is a long time, folks. Plus, no one knows how he'll handle big minutes on a regular basis. Full MLE is a lot to spend on what was initially viewed as Yao's backup. Now that Yao's hurt doesn't mean Gortat's value has risen.

Morey's playing it smart. Remember the days of Matt Maloney and Kelvin Cato. Let's not overpay for the chance to POSSIBLY stay competitive now while forsaking the future. Gotta keep the eyes on the bigger plan.

So, I guess the Rockets will be in the thick of things in the 2010 FA market. Interesting, though this season's going to be painful to watch.

Regardless of cap space we can sign both of them to minimum contracts of up to 2 years in length if we need to.

If true, what are we doing with the remaining portion? Does that go towards signing Taylor or Budinger?

You know a phrase is played out when Dick is using it; "in Morey I trust"

I've kinda caught on that the Rockets sometimes use Justice as a figurehead speaker for what info they want out in the public. That and he hates Ron.

I believe so with a third year that is a team option

I beileve that was the contracts that were given to Vspan, Novak JL3 and Dorsey recently

Brooks, Scola got better deals out of the MLE

Landry was just given a 1 year deal as we all know

That's like a tall glass of iced tea after a long day in the hot sun. It confirms that we are rebuilding.

I just changed my original post after I checked and confirmed that we could in fact sign them to minimums while over the cap. However, I don't see anything in the literature about a 3rd year option.

Thanks for the clarification. I'm just speculating here but i'd imagine Morey plans to sign one or both of those guys with a portion of the MLE, otherwise why not just offer the full MLE to Gortat outright?

Alternatively, I'd look at David Andersen from the Hawks.

Lowry + Cook for Andersen (sign for $4.3M, 30 day trade restriction)

    or

Lowry + Dorsey + White for Andersen (sign for $3.7M to $4.6M)

Lowry's an expiring contract. Good/promising PGs are overpaid in FA. It could be worse next season when one of the many disappointed teams with cap space have to throw their money somewhere else...

Rockeys paid around $4M for the rights to Taylor & Budinger. They'll want to sign them to at least 3 yr contracts. If last season was an indicator of things to come high 2nd round picks aren't accepting min contracts anymore. Without MLE money the Rockets won't be able to offer anything else but the min which could lead to problems...
