Maybe he's bluffing. I'd probably sign him anyway and wait out the 7 days.

Gortat doesn't even like SVG. Why would he want to be backup to DH and play 10 minutes, when he can play 20+ minutes for the Rockets :)

Magic general manager Otis Smith made that clear on Wednesday. The team's willingness to pay the luxury tax for the first time makes Smith confident that Orlando will pay the price to retain Gortat.

"The owner said we can go into tax so that changes things. Once you get clearance to (go beyond the luxury tax threshold), (Gortat) has to go get a deal and let us see what we're comfortable doing," Smith said. "At this point, we're matching everything that comes back to us on him.

"We'd all like to have Marcin back. That goes without saying."

There were plenty of other significant events involving the Magic on Wednesday, the first day of the free-agent courting period. Players and teams can't reach official deals until July 8, but handshake agreements could come as soon as today:

(this is the IMPORTANT PART)

Now you move on and go after a guy like Zaza, who some will maybe like more because he is proven and has experience, not to mention he is just as young I believe as Gortat.

Gortat can always request that the Magic don't match.

Does it really matter what Gortat wants? He's a RFA.

i think Otis smith is either a) bluffing to appease local fan base

    or most likely

    B)

saying this to drive up Gortat's price so while it doesnt effect them (since they wont resign) it does hurt the other team which in turn may help the Magic somewhere down the line.

the magic are close to lux tax hell as it is signing gortat to a 5.6 million dollar deal is like a 11 million/year for them

especially if someone signs him for like 4-5 years

i dont think the magic want to invest nearly 50 million into a backup C

Smith is probably only trying to use the threat of matching to work out a S&T-type deal and realize some value for Gortat.

If they want to spend $11 million+ (with tax) a year on Dwight Howard's back-up, so be it.
