http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Marcin-Gortat-120/ Gortat's 2005 draft profile... lots changed since back then, I'm sure, but his test results show he was a good athelete with 36 inch max verticle. He also had great bench press numbers for 7 footer who, back then, apparently weighted 225 lbs (without shoes). One would imagine his body has filled out some. Good 7'3.5'' wingspan and 9'2'' standing reach. He's longer than anyone currently on the team by a significant margin.
I would think this would be foolish on the Rockets part, sure it may give them the slightest of edges in wooing Gortat but I think the lack of season ticket sales, mini-package sales would plummet like the crazy. I am sure if the Rockets had a choice in revealing the news of Yao being out for the season/extended period of time they would have done so as close to training camp as possible so to maximize sales and as terrible as it sounds, lock in customers into their deals i mean the rockets are still a business first. I am sure some renewals and possible suites/mini package sales have already been cancelled or the potential for other sales dropped because of the news. I doubt the Rockets would have wanted to do that
I hope we get him. Everyone wanted him as Yao's backup, but now could possilby be our starter. I just hope he wont be satisfied with getting his money and will perform to his contract if he gets it from us. Chilcutt
I highly doubt the Rockets could hold their wad or keep it a secret that long in revealing Yao's situation until the start of training camp. The news would have probably broke sometime this summer, whether officially from the Rockets or a leak. Just saying it's pretty convenient that the story broke out right before the free agent date. We were going to still look for a big man anyways, with Yao healthy or not. Maybe it's all just a coincidence, but can't help and wonder.
I don't see him being a guy that's just gonna cash his checks. He is a blue collar guy that plays D and pretty well I might add. If we get him I think he will fit in perfectly.
How do you say scrub in Polish, you ask? Marcin Gortat. I really do hope he's some unearthed sabermetric gem. But until proven otherwise, I'll be looking forward to summer of 2010.
There is only one Team that can contend in this city and that is the Rockets. The Astros are nothing the Texans are ? The Rockets have proven that they have a chance. Whats more exciting?
For those that don't understand the potential of a guy like Gortat, consider this. In Luis Scola's last season in EURO League, he played 27 minutes and put up 15.5 points (11 shots per game), 5.9 rebounds, 2.2 assists, .9 steals, and .3 blocks per game. That was at age 27. In Marcin Gortat's last season in EURO League, he played 27 minutes and put up 10.4 points (6.9 shots per game), 5.6 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.1 blocks. That was at age 23. That's very similar production considering minutes played, offensive and defensive roles, and their difference in position. Now I ask you, what would Luis's averages have been in the NBA if he was playing behind a superstar PF and only getting 13 minutes game like Gortat has gotten behind Howard? Some simple math puts him around 6 points and 4 rebounds. Doesn't sound so amazing, but give him 30 minutes and he's more than sufficient as a starting PF. I strongly believe Gortat could do the same and he's shown it in limited opportunities.
well that sounds like that should be the case but i dont even live in Houston and I know that the pecking order goes Astros Texans Rockets
dunno if it was mentioned before (it probably was) but Gortat is a Restricted Free Agent chances are though the Magic will be forced to let him walk with their $ issues if they go over the cap its to re-sign Turk not Gortat
What are you looking forward to in 2010? The demand for the top 4 free agents will far outweigh the supply. What makes you think we have a chance of luring any of them to Houston? I'd say Bosh is our best bet but he had a decent team in Toronto and got nowhere. Why would LeBron or Wade sign with Houston over other teams? The rest of the "big names" in that free agent class will be getting pretty old and worn down (Nash, Ginobili, Allen, Dirk, etc...). Some teams will end up signing those guys and have a McGrady type situation where the player's performance takes a sharp nosedive from what that player used to be able to do, not even considering the increased risk of injury that naturally comes with age. All great players eventually stop being great. You don't want to get stuck with a "former" superstar no matter how sexy their name may be. In an interview a few months ago, Morey alluded to The 2010 Free Agency Sweepstakes as being mostly hype. If we are going to rebuild, it will take time - likely well beyond 2010.
Don't have numbers but I'm pretty sure the Texans are #1. NFL is a moneymaker, especially in Texas. Was going to reply to his post but decided not to bother. You pretty much summed it up.
Thank you for this. Some people really just don't think this guy is any good. If he gets a chance to play, he will put up stats
C'mon guys. keep the email coming. I think he won't read most of them, so quantity is what matters. KEEP THEM COMING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm an optimistic pessimist (your sarcasm detector should be beeping right about now). I rather look forward to summer of 2010, not just waiting on the FA period as much as who we'll be drafting in the lottery. And under Leslie Alexander's ownership, the free agency has been historically eventful, if not successful. You can scrap and fight for so many wins in this league w/o a star player, or two, or three... but hey, don't get me wrong, I'll root for the Rockets to win every game, even tho I don't like their chances. And why should you care if our prospective Polish "Hammer" (AKA Polish Mark Madsen) doesn't excite me... whatever. He's a scrub, until proven otherwise. And yes I hope he proves me wrong.
NFL is a sport where you can suck one season and be a Elite team the next. A lot of people think the Texans will make the playoffs, and in a singe elimination playoff format...that's all you need to do is just make it.
