if you have to give up those guys to get a superstar, you do it....if you believe that superstar can get you rings. you can find role players...that's far easier than finding the alpha dog you rely on.
I'm not saying we're the number 1 prime destination for the franchise players that are looking to bolt from their current situation, but there's alot to offer here that could be enticing for those franchise players. I think the role players here are flexible enough to accommodate many types of franchise players. Primarily a talented wing player. Now if we try to get that franchise player/s through the draft, then we might need to think about moving the older role players like Battier and Scola to get young assets and/or draft picks.
It's pretty mind-boggling to me how many posters struggle with this concept. You go out and find Bruce Bowen once you have your Tim Duncan. You find a Bill Walton type vet when you already have Bird, Parrish and McHale. You get an Olajuwan first and then get an Otis Thorpe. Regardless of popularity or producivity, you don't collect Rodney McCray's and Jim Petersen's and then find a Dream.
I think it's a lot more complicated than "rebuild or stand pat" . It's hard to commit one way or another before you know what the deal is with Yao. I would have traded him a while ago. But now you can't do that, obviously. So you have this huge contract, which makes it hard to rebuild. So what do you do? Try some "pre-rebuild" thing, where you sell everyone off and wait for rebuilding when Yao is gone? What happens if he comes back then? I don't see the org ever being willing to trade him, or anyone really lining up to give anything for him. If you try to just wait for his deal to expire, what if he comes back and he's good again? The fact is, championships are more luck than planning. If you do a great job of planning, you can have a competitive team most of the time if you're really good at it, but a championship is still a pipe dream. With Morey, the Rockets probably have a better chance than most to have a competitive team. A championship however, is still a pipe dream without extraordinary luck. I think each path (trying to be good regardless, or 'tanking') probably has a similar chance of success (success = championship). With that in mind, which would be more fun? Right now, I lean towards fielding a competitive team while still hoping for good luck.
so what moves do we make to MOVE ON? Yao and TMac are both under contract aren't they? Are you saying we should fire sale the team for future draft picks? I'm not against making some moves to fill the C and Go-To-Scorer positions, but I don't think we need to completely break the team apart.
uuh, okay...The REFS stop Yao . And McGrady said he's coming back beginning of the season.......and this time, it must be said- its his 'CONTRACT' year...so T-Mac will be back STRONG to carry the team like 13 in 33 Orlando Raptors Stupid Mark Cuban complaining to David Stern that series. I hate Michael Finley... We miss Bobby Sura Media wanted FAKERS to face Lebron in finals. If we ONLY had Yao, you see him limp off strong and then root team on from sideline? Cuz he CARES. And who did we beat the last game of win streak 2 years ago? yes, FAKERS. That means added together Rockets were merely 1/3 of a quarter away from passing them and being an eventual CHAMPION .... (And for the LAST time, Rockets wanted Thabo Sefalosha, NOT Rudy Gay, alright? Which means keep Battier and hopes alive)
If Yao's name was McGrady, Morey would have been fielding trader offers for both an injury-prone SG/SF and a C. Try convincing a business man like Leslie Alexander why he should sever ties with his (only) global cash cow, even if he is only available on a part-time basis.
is this a selling point??? i mean really...what's Thabo doing? have the Rockets been rumored to be interested in acquiring Thabo since that draft night? saying the Rox were so dumb that they wanted Thabo over Gay doesn't make me feel any better about any of this.
Tanking sure worked will for San Antonio when David Robinson got hurt and then they ended up drafting Tim Duncan. Who is the stud coming out of college next year. You need high lottery picks to improve in this league, Yao was a number 1 pick and McGrady was gotten because of the Francis pick, which I think was number 3.
I agree with this. I will add that it will always be sad for me that tmac and yao could NOT stay healthy--the potential to be so devastatingly dominant was there but it was just not meant to be for yao+mac.
I am all for rebuilding, but the only question is building around whom? I don't think that option exists among the current team. Then we have to look elsewhere. Lottery is gone. The last resort is trading, which star player do you suggest we build around, whom we can get by trading Yao or TMac or both?
we're clinging to that hope that these guys can stay healthy for an entire posteseason with artest. we would **** PEOPLE UP.
I think there is an important distinction between giving up on your team, and voicing your opinion on what you think your team should do to be good in the future. I don't think the OP at all is giving up on the team. I think the OP wants what's best for the team, as do I and I'm guessing, everyone else here on the BBS. So, no need to flame and throw mud and ask for bans. We all just have different ideas of what will bring this team success now and in the long term. Me, personally, I like Yao, I don't mind TMAC playing here (I know, don't kill me), but I'm just thinking it might be time to let go. I'm agrereing with the OP there. Now, when to let go, I don't know. I hope Morey and Les just do what's best for the team. Is it best to let go now? 2010? Whatever it is. The inury thing is getting really old. It's always something. (And I'm also getting really tired of the inaccuracy of how these injuries are represented/portrayed/reported. Maybe it's incompetence, maybe it's just the unkown, maybe it's medical stuff I don't understand, but seriously, this could threaten Yao's whole next season and maybe Yao's career, and we're just now figuring that out and talking about a cast/surgery? Like I said, I'm not a doctor, I don't know, maybe they just didn't know before how serious the injury was, but crap. How could they have not done this test before and seen how serious this thing was?) Moving on...I love our role players, I think, if nothing else, they will be what makes next year interesting. I want to see those guys grow and get better, and hopefully we can pick up a mini-star before next year so we can have a decent season. Either way, I'll enjoy it. Just do what's best for the Rockets, that's what it's all about. Go Rockets
