Except I wouldn't be surprised if he actually talked to Yao though.

Yeah I was hesitant to make a new thread, but I did because it sounds like Yao doesn't want to call it a career just yet

I admire Yao's courage. It's perfectly understandable where he is coming from. He wants to get healthy again. He knows the risks involved here and is willing to take them.

Eh, this is significant. Bucher knows Yao better than any of the other reporters, and he was by far the most optimistic yesterday, calling it likely that he would play in the second half of the season. To have this kind of reversal from the one source of optimism -- it's not looking good.

Wasn't his likeliest scenario yesterday for Yao to get surgery and miss a bit of next season?

This guy needs to make up his mind

He's likely reporting what he's hearing, not forming opinions.

So, if Yao goes for surgery and the doctors say he's likely to miss the season, what's the course of action? Should the Rockets offer an extension (significantly less than max, I'd hope), or wait for Yao to (in all probability) exercise his player option for ~17 million?

Yao could have been the one to change his mind, from "my team needs me" to "my team needs to get healthy first". When it comes to Yao's feet, apparently no one knows what's going to happen.

F**k offering him an extension, trade him the first chance you get. Take garbage or expirings and 2nd round picks, cut your losses, someone may take a chance on him for a second round pick or garbage.

I agree trade him but not for no 2nd round pick. Yao is basically in the same boat as McGrady and I believe if they are trying to get rid of McGrady then they should and need to get rid of the other injury prone player.

I wouldn't want to offer this guy another contract until he proves he can stay healthy. Ever since being drafted its crazy how many times we've seen Rockets center out for the season. Everytime he is out its for the same damn reason. Damn Foot.
