i know this has probably been said but im just to lazy to read the other 40 pgs....if this injury was going to happen it couldnt have happened at a better time. maybe its the eternal optimist in me but look at it this way, what happens if yao heals enough to play signs an extension after he opts out then hamstrings us when he goes down next season with a huge max contract. Instead we get the news with only 2 years left on his contract and the same year tracy's contract comes off the books. Just in time for the greatest free agent class ever. So I say to you loyal clutchfans (and ppl who have probably already typed this) if yao is out, blow it up and see who and whats left to build with when the dust settles. If you try and trade t-mac or ab right now wouldnt net nearly as much in return as it would if we had a healthy yao. Teams would think we are desperate and try to bend us over....so just ride it out rox fans. It could be worse, we could be right in the middle of the longest win streak and then lose our star center dashing all our hopes and dreams for that season. Oh wait...we did that, DAMN YOU CRUEL FATE!!!

    He's done.

Why else would Morey be trying so hard to get Rubio. (offering Brooks and Battier)

There is one troubling thought about rebuilding.

It is been fairly constant that teams with the best players in the league win the NBA title. There have been some exceptions, but that has been by far the rule.

Over the next 4-8 years, the best players in the NBA will be really hitting their prime. We are talking about the MVP-caliber players most likely to lead their team to a NBA title:

    Lebron James
    Dwyane Wade
    Carmelo Anthony
    Dwight Howard
    Chris Paul
    Brandon Roy/LaMarcus Aldridge

If we do start any kind of rebuilding process, the timeframe would likely be trying to be a contender within 6 years, right during the prime of all these players. That means any team we try to construct has to be able to defeat teams with these players who are not veterans.

So my question then becomes, what very young player, let's say Durant or younger, that is currently in the league could we construct our team around that can compete with these players who are already playing at an MVP levels but will soon have experience and will likely be on teams with much better starting casts soon?

The only players who have shown any sort of signs of having this capability would be Durant & Rose. There is fanfare with Rubio and numerous others in this draft and a few from the last draft, but who among those players would the Rockets really be able to get in trade?

Honestly, the only option I see is completely throwing these team to the draft for the next few years. I am not saying tanking, but trading all the players we have that likely won't help us in say 4-5 yrs it would have a similar effect.

At least we didn't give him a max contract. Like I have been saying whoever gives him a max contract is going to be screwed.

The news report is speculative -- it's a fact that Yao's hairline fracture has gotten worse but whether or not he will miss a season or two hinges on how well his foot heals in the next 4 months, which is still a lot of time.

At the same time we heard we were using Battier/Brooks to acquire the 2nd pick from the Grizz as well. Except that deal had us trying to pry away Gay as well. So something isn't adding up. We don't have all the details on that Brooks/Battier 4 Rubio deal. No chance. So I am not sure if you can look that far into it. Hell maybe we were going after Jefferson.

God that's awful, but so true. What if they had given him a max extension and he had gone down six months later? It was my worst fear, but at least we don't have to worry about that now.

It's time to rebuild and start talking about the 2010 lottery. That's a hard pill to swallow, but there really isn't any other alternative.
