I know Mattj hears this all of the time, but I really wish they would pair him back up with Wexler in the afternoons. Both of those guys have solid sports knowledge and are fun to listen to. The fact that Rich Lord is still on the radio though steers me away from 610. If they made that change I would be never leave their afternoon show.
I feel the same, I can listen longer to them because it is not non-stop, already discussed sports topics.
John and Lance RARELY take callers...they joke about that all the time. I'm with you on the tangets...particularly this time of year, there ain't much to talk about. Talk about the Astros game last night....speculate on Rockets trades...no news on the Texans....there ain't much else to say. I like that they don't continue to beat the dead horse all day.
In my defense, I will say that when you have a chance to interview Billy Zabka and Susanna Hoffs on back to back days, you don't walk, you RUN to get those interviews. Are we clear? Good. In all seriousness, at the end of the day, (as I think it was studogg who said it) it's good for everyone in the market (listeners and talent) to have all of these options for sports talk. It's great for listeners for all of the reasons outlined in this thread, and it's great for the talent to have this kind of competition, both to fuel us day-to-day and to have places to ply our trade. Plus, it just sounds so much more impressive when I'm hitting on chicks to tell them that my show is ranked second in afternoon drive out of FOUR sports talk stations in the 25-54 male demographic than it does saying we're second out of two or three that, for the sake of my already sparse sex life, I hope all four stations survive. (But just survive ... not thrive.) (As for studogg's contention that someday they'll need to break up me and Harris or "upgrade" the timeslot altogether, if they ever did that, you'd find me driving down the road with tears streaming down my face and "Just Once" by James Ingram playing in the background. Like this cat ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkPQinEEB94) As for our show, I'm frankly surprised that we get any support at all in a forum that is so sports-specific like ClutchFans because our show really is A.D.D. radio, bouncing in and out of topics, sports and otherwise. Those who enjoy it, really enjoy it (at least I've been told that by, like, at least 3 people, not including my dad), and frankly I'm not surprised nor insulted at all that someone like A_3P0 who has 14,000+ posts in three years on a Rockets forum wouldn't like our show. I don't mean that in a "you're a loser if you have 14,000 posts way", what I mean is that if you're passionate enough about a SPORTS topic to post that many times in a forum, our show will not be sports specific enough for you. It just won't. Like ... ever. That's fine. I like to think that in a perfect world, somewhere there's a message board for "drunken frat boy/gambling/pop culture" talk where they are worshiping at the altar of Sean and John and complaining about how every time they switch over to Charlie Palillo he's always talking about something other than Pulp Fiction or p*rn. (In all honesty, I never get the "drunken frat boy" association with our show; I mean, Harris doesn't even drink.) Honestly, though, what the hell is there to talk about sports-wise for FOUR hours this time of year? Like I said, the good news is you have options. If you want a breakdown of the WHIP numbers for the Astros lefties on the road during day games, that's why you have Charlie. If you want someone screaming at the top of his lungs about ... well, everything, that's why you have Calvin. If you want a show with one talented, hard working co-host having to carry his lazy co-host's ass for four hours, that's why you have Matt & Rich. (Note to the new 610 GM -- please never let Rich go. Ever. And don't put MJ & Wex back together. As a hated competitor of yours, I implore you, do NOT do these things. Because doing these things would only help you, and I am pre-programmed to root for your downfall ... or at least your noticeable decline.) There, I think that about covers it. T minus 90 minutes till the WWE pay per view ... that's a sport, right? Sean Pendergast 1560 The Game http://twitter.com/SeanCablinasian (Twitter ... for all of my thoughts on southern Louisiana, 90210, and classic NBA Draft footage on NBA-TV. It's like our show, but in 140 character, mindless blurbs. What a world.)
Heh, good stuff Sean. Has the signal improved for 1560? I'd give them another try if I was able to tune in.
Isn't radio mostly supposed to just keep you entertained when you're stuck in traffic, just trying to make it home without going completely insane in your car? I'd rather listen to guys going on random tangents than listening to bad phone call after bad phone call about how Yao Ming should be traded and Mario Williams isn't rated highly enough on Madden. I think we already had that thread though. Like Almighty Rome says "More of me and less of you is a good thing"
Great post all around. Very funny, very direct and very true. I'm gonna give you guys a try in the afternoon when I'm out on sales calls. What I expect out of a show is at least SOME serious discussion about whatever is relevant at the time and for the hosts to demonstrate decent knowledge about what they discuss. I hate it when guys like Marc, Andre or Calvin say something totally ludicrous that has no basis in fact because they don't know enough, repeat cliches time-after-time or take 2 minutes to ramble on something a normal person could say in 15 seconds (Craig Roberts). I know there are times when the news is sparse and you have to pass the time, but to stay on my radar, you have to demonstrate substance where there IS news. Guys like Goofball (Granato), who's schtick is to crack stupid jokes 99% of the time, make me want to scream. I don't mind jokes from hosts who are competent. If Lance were on by himself, I might listen sometimes. For the record, only a small percentage of my posts are about the Rockets. I gave up on the GARM a looooong time ago. I'm also a huge Texans fan like most every other Houston sports fan, Clutchfans member or not. (I also know Andre and Craig Roberts are gone. Just using them as illustrations).
At the end of the day, I wish the saying "at the end of the day" would go away. Justice says it all the time. That said, I enjoy your show. Keep it up.
The key to getting the most out of the Sean and John show is to catch the Game 7 from 3:15ish to 3:30ish where they lay out what they might be talking about during the show that day.
I don't like this Jason Goch guy one bit on the weekends on SNR. Good thing he's only on really late on weekends...
I have been going to school in colorado for the past year, so I have not really had a chance to watch 1560's new stuff, although that is what I was listening to when I left. I caught Sean and John on Friday for the first time and liked it quite a bit. I prefer the occasional breaks from overly discussed sports topics.
I remember first listening to these guys is what got me into sport talk. They worked well and had a good show.
I might lose my Dad of the Year Award...but my 9 year old is the biggest fan of your show, Sean! That's not an insult, either...he's a freaking genius. Plus, his old man loves it...so there's that.
Amen to this...the internet KILLED this style of sports radio, in my opinion. All these discussions are happening all day, every day whereever you like on the internet. Constant flow of information all day, as well. So by the time I get in the car in the afternoon, I don't need all that. I may want to hear what THESE GUYS have to say about it, because I care about their opinions...but i don't need 3 hours of call in on it. A show that can mix sports with other random crap is good for me. Maybe that's why the vast majority of my posts here are in the Hangout. 1560 has also done an amazing job of creating a weird sense of intimacy among listeners, sponsors and radio personalities...i think that's brilliant, actually...and is extremely difficult to duplicate.
although you can turn on 1560 and hear some random stuff and laugh your ass off (if you have a sense of humor), if you stick around for their sports coverage, it's golden. you cant really blame them for going off on a tangent right now, cuz look where we are as a sports city. astros. thats about it. but even this morning, they had some great talk about the teams pitching and why matsui is playing over mayssonet. (however u spell it). but if yall listened during the playoff run and ESPECIALLY college football, they have some absolutely great takes on all their shows (not including Hoffy, but strippers are people too ). i was a loyal 610 listener up until about a year ago, and ive gone back periodically to hear rich lord piss me off. IMO, 1560 is slowly taking over, and its just a matter of time before they take a game-time broadcast. that would be tight. 1560 all the way baby! yeah, whatevuh, GOODBYE! (the wise words of SEC guy.)
The thing that weirds me out about 1560 is how cult-like it is. I used to know a quiet little geek named Miguel. Now he's a slave to what this radio station commands him to do. Endless inside jokes are the downfall of any geek. I think they are slowly trying to take over the world. ONE OF US! ONE OF US!
Agreed. This is why I feel they've been so successful. There hosts are so approachable during remotes, their "paloozas" have been great, they are always comming up with great ideas for their listeners. Their golf tournament at Wild Cat was amazing. They make you feel like a big part of the secret society.
Max, the 1560 'intimacy' reminds a little of early FM radio where the music was the central focus but the 'community' of likemindedness was what gave it it's identity and ultimately it's loyalty. KLOL was the center of the world for Houston's Freaks. The station had a very loyal following until the corporate masters abandoned Them to try and find another rating point. 1560 is becoming the center of the world for Houston Sporto's. It seems like they are going to be content with a smaller percentage but more loyal listeners. It's got to be a better business plan in a world with a million choices.
