I finally got my hands on Demon's Souls, (RPG/action). Wow! (This game has not been released in US yet. It is due later this year. I got the Korean version but works fine on my PS3 here and has all text and voice in English as well, which is very well done actually). This game has everything.... Great artwork and environments: The characters look very lifelike. The game has a Gothic feel to it and is beautifully done with sound. It really sets the mood. Superb Combat mechanics: Fantastic. Controls are not very complicated but you can move/dodge/attack in a variety of ways. Combat feels challenging and satisfying. Unique Online play: You can play offline, but you should definitely try out online play. Other people playing playing from parallel worlds leave notes on the floor either warning you or tricking you. You can be either in soul form or human form. If you are in human form, other players can enter your world and try to hunt you down. Conversely, as a soul form you can enter someone else's world and hunt hem down. of course you can also c0-op and help people. When people die, they leave bloodstains behind. Inspecting those replays the last 10 seconds of their action leading to their death. Challenging: The most challenging game I have played on PS3. There are several worlds/levels. If you die you go back to the place you started and lose all your souls (currencies) unless you get your corpse back on your first try. There are no manual save points and frequent checkpoints. Which means, this game is not for those playing aimlessly and carelessly. You have to think and always be on alert. You have to try different strategies under different circumstances. Very challenging but at the same time very gratifying. NPCs and Weapons: NPCs and Weapons look fantastic. If you have a PS3, you owe it to yourself to try this game out. OK, enough. I think I am going to go back now and enjoy getting my ass kicked.
I'm hesitant to import it since Atlus is publishing the game for North America relatively soon (well, maybe not "soon") and I don't think the Asian version will work with the other NA players
Purchased this around two months ago. Constantly played it for about two weeks. Really awesome action/rpg and probably one of the best next-gen rpgs yet. I have a level 80 and level 300? if you need help. My level 300 has nothing and I admit to cheating on that one. The level 80 is all legit and much stronger. Btw, levels don't mean much in this game. The most important thing is your gear. You have to spend some time if you want good/best gear. You only need to level up for the required stats for the equipment you want to use. Other than that, leveling up will hurt you.
Controls are very good. I am relatively new to console gaming and I have no problem with the controls.
Still some time before US release. 1) Buy the Asian one now(I got brand new and sealed copy for $60 on ebay). 2) Play it and enjoy it. 3) Sell it back on ebay for $50 or so. 4) Buy the US version when it releases for some more fun.
I just defeated the first boss, phalanx. I am still not sure how to use souls wisely. Should i keep spending and if yes then on what? I am afraid that if I stockpile them, sooner or later someone will enter my game and kill me and take my collection. When other players kill you, do you lose just souls or items as well?
Definitely interested, although I'll be waiting for the US release. I have about 8 PC games I bought through Steam recently (damn weekend deals), and I'd like to go through those first.
Gonna wait till it releases in the states. I think its August. I still have to decide on Fight Night or Blaz Blue. What do you think of the online? Is it necessary to get past some guys? Is it easier only it cuts fight times shorter or on a strategic level (2 fronts)?
It's the same as dieing in the regular mode. Find your bloodstain before you die again and you'll get your souls/currency back. Use your souls on items and the forge (upgrade equipment). http://demonssouls.wikidot.com/online = Pretty much everything you need to know about this game. I'm going to purchase Blazblue, but I can wait until it's discounted. I don't think it's going to be a popular game and it won't take long before it hits the bargain bins.
Wow this looks cool. My first thought was "bleh" to an Asian RPG as I've never really been a fan, but this looks freakin' awesome.

I've had Demon's Souls for a while and it's OK but not great. To say it's simply amazing is ridiculous hyperbole. It will score 7.5-8.0 when it comes out in the US. Basically, Demon's Souls is Monster Hunter with better graphics, somewhat worse gameplay, and much worse online play. Combat is very limited (it's like Monster Hunter that way), but the real killer here is that the itemization sucks, which is critical in a game of this type. You very rarely get to upgrade your equipment, and items can't be sold, so there's no point to 99% of the drops you get. A sword I snagged a few hours in is still by far the best weapon I have roughly 25 hours later. I'm still wearing my starting armor, except the shield has been changed. The other killer is that there's basically no story at all, and the game world is very bland. There are only even a few characters to interact with, and they do functional things like sell you items. Demon's Souls is what it is: a competent dungeon crawler with some cool bosses (most of which are overpowered but can be killed easily with glitches/expoits) and above average level design. It's definitely not a top tier game though, and the only reason it has somewhat of a cult following is that there aren't many games of its type on PS3/360.
Tell me how the game play is worse and why the online play is "much worse". What sword did you use that's your best weapon 25 hours later? I'd disagree that armor isn't important. Your class determines if it's necessary to have good armor. I'd agree there isn't much of a story, but this game is a action/rpg, not traditional rpg. This type of action/rpg isn't going to appeal to the general rpg crowd. It's a niche title and if you came in with expectations rather than enjoying it for it is, you'll be disappointed. The beauty of this game is it takes skills to defeat each enemy. Even if you have good armor/weapons, you could still easily die to a low level monster if you're not careful. On my first play through, I almost finished the game with just the starting dagger. I didn't know about upgrading my equipment etc and almost quit many times because I thought the game was too difficult. Once I understood the game mechanics, the game became fun and I sorta cheated by summoning 2-3 blue knights to help me finish the levels I had difficulty with.
Bought the game about a month ago. I currently have a lvl 69 Thief. The game is definitely initially very, very difficult. I have about 45 hours or so into the game and I'm doing very well at the moment. I don't die much and have nice equipment. Btw, if you want to know how to play the game, this link is a must have: http://demonssouls.wikidot.com/
