Scorer is different from ball hog. Taylor has better court vision and is a more efficient shooter than Wafer. He will give up the ball, unlike Wafer who NEVER gives up the ball. His ball handling is his biggest weakness tho, according to DX and other sites. Like most of you, I can only gauge his play from vids and other 2nd hand sources. What I love most about Taylor (and Bud) is that he was the go to guy on his team. Knows what it is like to play under pressure, mental strength is an extremely underrated intangible.
He could be a poor man's Dwyane Wade for us. Look at his scouting report and predraft measurements. What are Dwyane Wade's strengths? Athleticism, explosiveness to the rim, body control, ability to draw fouls, and a scorer's mentality. This guy can be a rotation player for us next season.
He's a senior, he has average ball handling skills, and is a pretty average defender. Then the other knock on him was that he was turnover prone, had poor shot selection and didn't win at college. The first 3 things are fair - on the last 3, he only had 0.13 turnovers per possession - but because he had SO MANY possessions it gave him an overall number of 2.8tpg his senior year. But he isn't really turnover prone - just had the ball a LOT. Poor shot selection - well, he was the only option for his team, so had to force things - but despite constant double teams still managed 48% from the field (including 3.0 3pointers per contest at 38%). And he didn't win at college because he had no help. He probably got a few undeserved red flags and looks to be a fairly decent prospect. Michael Redd went in the second round too
He actually measured up better than expected at the pre-draft camp too - 6'5 with 6'9 wingspan and 8'5 standing reach (same as the 6'7 Budinger - and the 6'9 Landry has 8'6.5 standing reach) Be really interesting to see him in Summer League!
Amen. Though his ball handling is in question, I will like to believe he could be a steal. In Morey we trust.
The giddy optimism over two second rounders is amazing, but I guess we all need a little glow to combat the other teams' "shine." On an unrelated tangent, Taylor's #5 belonged to Cutino Mobley and KirK Synder. Who were some other "5s?" I can't think of a single "10" that Budinger now wears. Maybe some "tradition" will wear off on them.
I'm guessing the same thing that made teams shy away from drafting Brooks and Landry. All have some warts but sure but in the end do they do something good enough to make a significant contribution.
What worries me is the bad karma of "5" -- Mobley developed heart problems and Snyder went off the deep end. Are there no more noteworthy "10" players than Tierre Brown?
hope it's not this guy...he has a habit of starting strong and fading late <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/y15IeCy4iXs&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/y15IeCy4iXs&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Morey has turned late 1st or 2nd round players into starters, 2 years in a row. 2007 Spanoulis(50th pick 2004 draft) traded for Scola(Starting PF) Drafted Brooks(26th pick)(Starting PG) Drafted Landry(31st pick)(Backup PF) 2008 Donte Greene(28th pick) traded for Artest(Starting SF) 2009 Taylor? Budinger? Llull? Our forward slots are done. He needs to fill the back up C, and the starting SG role. We know he is shopping T-Mac. He's got 3 guys to either develop or trade. Morey likes to work his magic after summer camp. That's when the other GMs see how talented the Morey picks are. I am hoping for a new starting SG.
Snyder was number 13. And number 5 hasn't been that bad to the Rockets. If Taylor is anywhere close to what Mobley did for the Rockets, that'd be good enough. Then Juwan Howard was another "5". Also, Donte Greene when he was a Rocket for a month, scored 40 points in a summer league game. The number "10" on the other hand hasn't been that great. There was Keith Bogans who was ok, but played for us only for half a season. But then, of course, there's Vmac, Kill Bill Spanoulis. It's much better going retro for number "10". Let's hope Budinger is much closer to Sam Cassell than Spanoulis. lol at Clutchfans analyzing players right down to their jersey numbers...
i have a feeling both players will be contributing, taylor looks like our 6th man of the future, and chase looks like someone who can come in and give battier artest mac a rest. bravo morey, as always. we had nothing, now we have 3 potentially rotational players. i'm really excited about taylor. he's a scoring machine, something we've lacked for awhile.
I don't know why but its something about these two that makes me feel good. I know that sounds creepy, but its like I feel like they know what there doing, and can contribute immediately. Something refreshing about them. or maybe i'm just to tired to think right.
