If that's the case his music will live on in iTunes. No big deal then. Move along people.

    Please elaborate.

Elvis brought black music to white America. The Beatles broke open the British Invasion and popularized many innovations like the concept album, music video, new studio techniques, and popularized the ensemble band instead of the one man show like Elvis.

So what did MJ do, bring white pop music to black communities? I know he's famous world wide and sold gazillion records, won a ton of grammy's, made MTV and music video as a whole really take off in the 80's, but what will he be known for as a cultural music icon?

    Yes.

I would say he is past Elvis and easily past Dylan for sure. The only other group/person i can think of being equals are the beatles.

MJ wasnt just big here, he was HUGE over every part of the world. If there were people living in the south pole you can bet they'd be jamming to MJ as well.

elvis/dylan were big here really big maybe big also in pockets of the world.

Not on the same level though as MJ and the Beatles...I may even say that MJ maybe even more popular than the beatles but not sure about that.

It's common knowledge that Asians hated the Beatles. Something about them mocking their haircuts.

Elvis didn't have MTV and other mass media machines like MJ had in the 80's.

And we need to draw a line in cultural music influence and just popularity. Madonna is famous world wide...although I guess she influenced alot of girls to turn to music, unfortunately girls like Britney Spears...

Well, I feel like you answered your own question in the second paragraph (some pretty iconic things)...

I guess I need your definition of a cultural icon, because it seems like an absolute no brainer to me.

Yeah, I kind guessed I would be in the minority. I did grow up in the 80s and 90s. I was born 78, so I very much remember the Michael Jackson hysteria before he went too mental. I never liked him, even as a kid, teenager or adult.
I used to have a very hard time with Justin Timberlake when he went solo, just because he sounded too much like M J.
I have no idea why I dislike Michael Jackson so much, I just do. No personal loss for me..I just have to listen to all the country music stations for a few weeks I guess. They keep playing his music over and over.

Oh ,we had our fair share of his music. I think Michael Jackson was equally huge all over the world.

Me not liking him has nothing to do with being European, white, female etc..I just do not like him. I hate his voice, music and pretty much everything about him. Him being dead will not change my mind.

Anyways, it's my personal feelings about the whole thing. I guess it's a good thing we all have different taste in music. It would be kind of boring if we all liked the same things.

Folks in villages in Africa didn't hear about Michael Jackson by watching MTV on their non-existent TVs. Obviously the dawn of the media age helped MJ but there's not even a doubt as to if he is up there with Elvis and the Beatles. He's past them without a doubt.

Not really disputing that he is one, but trying to find an explanation of why he should be up there with the other two I mentioned. I just feel alot of his fame is due to smart advertising and mass media hysteria.

I will say IMO that MJ was the face of the 80's music decade. I think he's somewhere in the middle of 2 extreme examples: Nirvana earnestly starting the grunge era...and Britney Spears being the first one breaking out and reaping the benefits to the bubblegum pop era, thus becoming the de-facto figurehead symbol of it.

For a bit of a laugh without using the usual tasteless and classless MJ/molestation jokes.
Love this vid of Chris Tucker on MJ

He did have TV though and remember the controversy that surrounded him when he appeared and TV dancing a certain way? I'm sure that helped fuel his career more than you care to realize and not just that one appearance.

I'd also argue that MTV probably owes immeasurable amounts of their success to Michael Jackson, not the other way around.
