achebe...touche...i'm seeking props, but also corrections. This idea could be flawed. really though, I felt I was writing too much in Popeye's thread. So I pulled this side-tangent out. I was kinda thinking out loud trying to figure things out.

    Here are possible flaws:
    1. Mango says the coupon dies if used in a trade with a team under the cap. That makes sense to me, cause the CBA is only trying to reward teams for ridding themselves of excess salary.

    2. Does the coupon always die in trades and I'm completely off track again? I doubt it. The FAQ would tend to say something as straigth-forward as that. I would expect LC to say that in the definition of the exception.

Are there other questions anyone wants asked of LC? Mango, list your deadline questions again.

Nike: Neither Portland or us were under the cap. The salaries didn't exactly match (cause trades only need be within 15%)...thus out popped a coupon for us for going down in salary. I think Mango answered the rest of your questions (my #1 above). The team under the cap is not a requirement in a trade, but is pretty much always necessary when traded salaries don't match. They are the recipient of the larger salary--often they are the third team in a 3-way trade.

yes....if Orlando stands pat with their three picks, they take a >$5m cap hit before free agency season. Even trading down in the #7-11 range still has them holding over $3m in rookie scale salaries.

Anyone want to search out what Orlando's total salary is, and pass it on to us. Can they really afford a $9m free agent given the fact they have so much rookie scale to absorb.

    again:
How about a #13 and Doleac for the exception? Insert whatever starch you want to balance it out.

anyone: Does 'cash consideration' equate to cap space or just money for the owner?

The exception is good, the exception is warm.

    well, I didn't mention Doleac.

It is my opinion that you can't underestimate the value of the exception all by itself.

Say, Portland intends to break up the team (especially Wallace), Cato and that trade exception and a couple picks from another team (3 way trade), may be all that's needed.

Portland gets our #9, Vancouvers #4 and a trade exception to start re-building around Grant/Stoudamire.

We get Wallace, and Vancouver gets Cato.

    add starch where needed.

Pure dreamcasting here, but that exception is, to me, as valuable as the #3/4 pick in the league, because of the transferability of it and how it can create magical trades.
