Just wondering what would happen if Ming is being paid by the Rockets and in the offseason, get injured playing over in China?
I guess the same question can be asked for a lot of NBA players that play pickup games in the offseason or MLB players that play winterball. But those players watch their bodies and don't play as "all-out" as Ming would play in an actual tournament.
Then again what about the Dream Team?

I think that there should be some insurance clause or something that protects the team from having to pay a salary if the player gets a basketball related injury in the offseason and can't play the following season.

That would suck to have Ming get injured and put on the shelf for a season because he got injured playing for China rather than Houston.

I guess these are all risk though.

It's just part of the game. Many foreign players go back to play in European tournaments over the summer. There is an argument to be made that it is better that they are staying in shape and working too.

Good answer. But I believe keeping in shape in a pickup type games as opposed to full contact "balls out" play is less risky.
Then again what do I know.
If all I did for a living was play basketball and make millions, I'd probably want to play year round also.

Is there any protection for teams or is it no different than cutting your hand opening fathers day presents and needing surgery that keeps you out for 6 months.

Or like Moises Alou falling off a treadmill or Caminiti falling out of a deerstand or Jeff Kent falling off his motorcycle.
Boy baseball players are stupid sometimes.
You never hear of "freak" accidents happening to basketball players unless it's Barkley hurting his back throwing a midgit through a window!!
