He was a 1st overall pick in 2006 even if his numbers don't reflect it. I know nothing about him but he must have potential.
How much potential do you need to get Michaels or Berkman out right about now? Everyone with a pulse is doing that.
AHHHHHHHHH! Another frustrating loss. Everytime you think these guys are getting it together they come out and just tick you off. How can this team not score runs? I mean, they had ten hits last night and got nothing out of it.
Interesting you should ask. Zach Levine (who provides the best Astros coverage at the Chron by far, in my opinion) wrote a piece about that exact subject this morning: http://blogs.chron.com/unofficialscorer/2009/06/the_emptiest_night_in_astros_h.html Basically, he points at the lack of walks and isolated power. We're a great singles-hitting team and we actually hit above league average w/ RISP. It's the lack of walks and extra-base hits that keeps us near the bottom of the league in runs scored.
But he's hitting .111 over the last 8 games. After the bad start, he had about a month of playing well. Now he's starting to fade again.
Spin the numbers any way you want...like I could say he is hitting 5-27 in his last 9 games. Or I could say he is hitting under .200 with RISP. Puma is having an off season. There is no way to spin this.
Dude please please please keep playing Winwood. I am not a fan but it makes Rich so mad. Have a day of all Winwood AC/DC bump music.
In all honesty, the first two games really could have gone either way. But wasting a quality start from Roy last night was just criminal.
Depends what you considering playing well. He's had a 0.900+ OPS for all of May and June and his stats during those two full months have basically mirrored his career stats. He sucked horribly in April, but that's about it. 8 game "slumps" happen all the time for every player - it's random luck and statistical random chance.
I haven't been following the Astros too much lately, but isn't it obvious Pence is there best offensive weapon this year? If so, why has Cooper moved him to 6th in the lineup? That seems stupid to me. He has a much better OBP than Tejada.
you're making the same sweeping generalizations about stat geeks that you're accusing them of making when considering baseball games. the vast majority of them are not robots; they do consider specific game situations. generally speaking, yes - they abhor giving away outs. and that's an easily defensible position to take. hell, look what grienke said about the keepinger bunt in the 8th. “(W)henever guys bunt and give me an out — I don’t care what the situation is — it makes it a lot easier when you get a free out. Even if the guy moves up a base.” my guess is that a large portion would have favored cooper bunting in that *specific* situation. but here's the counter-argument: if pudge successfully moves the runners up (and sacrifices himself), the royals would have almost CERTAINLY walked matsui (to load the bases) and brought michaels and his .247 OB% to the plate. with an out on the board, KC could've played their CIs in, their MIs back, raising the possibility of an inning-ending DP. that where giving away an out can come back to bite you. i thought the bunt was probably the best option; but it wasn't, imo, a no-brainer. would you rather have pudge or michaels up in that situation?
who did michaels do to get a spot on this team? I'll admit, that was a nice-psuedo catch last night, but this guy is the pits. I have a hard time believing that we don't have someone better for this role.
sadly, there are four other guys on the current roster with OB%s below 300; two of which are everyday players.
