Good move by the Spurs. Add another scorer and defender for nothing. Get rid of the olds and slows.

The Spurs probably will get a younger athletic big man play alongside Tim Duncans. It's not too good news for the other teams in Western Conference.

this makes them better, but at least they didn't get anyone who the rockets could be after. they made their move. one less team with endings to worry about on the market.

boston, cleveland, and miami are our only major competitors remaining for predatory trades.

That would be a real coup for us but I don't see it happening.

CRAP...this is a great move by a GM....

Let's see if Morey can get something for nothing.....the Spurs have been awesome at getting good players and giving up minor pieces.

Morey did it with Artest, let's see if he can do it with Tmac.

    Damn,

Hell of a trade by the Spurs.

Well, that pretty much secures T-Soft for another year on the team. We need all the help we can get to go up against the Spurs.

    Wow. Excellent trade.

So Oberto will be free agent. He could be the backup center for Rockets. But If i were DM, I'd defenitely talk to jason kidd first.

They will pay the Luxury tax and won't (theoretically) afford to resign Bowen, Oberto. First team to jump the gun. They have set the tone and it's time to wait for cheap teams to call Toyota center.

If they Bucks were trying to trim salary they could have easily saved more by making the deal with the Rockets, its not like they received any real talent back from the Spurs. Seems like Morey thinks he can get talent that is better than RJ, lets hope he works his magic soon!

Great move for the Spurs though, they have a big 4 in which all players are capable of giving you 20 a night.

the bolded statement is exactly the reason why tmac is more likely to get traded, IMO.

I agree with you and it happens, but...

I'm just thankful that this wasn't the Lakers or Cavs who made this deal or else you'd have an outcry here on the bbs with the whacko conspiracy theorists saying that David Stern rigged the deal.....

No, the Bucks could NOT have easily saved more salary by trading with the Rockets.

The keys to this deal were the contracts of Bruce Bowen and Fabricio Oberto. Sure, Kurt Thomas's contract expires after next season, but Bowen's and Oberto's deals are only PARTIALLY guaranteed for next season. Forget about the summer of 2010, the Bucks INSTANTLY shed $5-6M off their payroll. As in, as of today.

Any team that trades for T-Mac will (subject to insurance payments, which we still don't know enough about) have to pay T-Mac's entire $23M salary, plus any resulting luxury tax, if applicable. The financial benefits will not be recognized by that team until July of 2010. In fact, given the whopper of a contract that T-Mac has, trading for him would likely result in the other team INCREASING its payroll for the 2009-10 season. That is, unless the Rockets agree to take close to $29M back in junk contracts. That's a lot of contracts.

I saw a move like this coming for the Spurs a mile away. Well, perhaps not THIS good. But knowing about the partially guaranteed contracts of Bowen and Oberto, I had a strong feeling that the Spurs would be uniquely positioned, if it wanted to, to pull off a major steal with a team in desperate financial need.

This is also why I think the division is going to get even tougher. Dallas still has Jerry Stackhouse's partially guaranteed contract that is actually a BETTER trade asset than Bowen's and Oberto's contracts combined. Stack is owed $7M next season but is only guaranteed $2M. Mark Cuban will likely be able to turn that contract into another fairly significant asset. Perhaps the #5 pick in the draft.

T-Mac's expiring contract is not nearly the trade chip that contracts like Stackhouse's, Bowen's and Oberto's are.

Not to be contrarian but it's actually "I don't know anything yet if I find something out I'll put it here"

Actually, that's a great point. If the Bucks release Oberto, he'd make a pretty good back-up for Yao and probably not too expensive since Milwaukee would still be paying him AFAIK. He'll probably want to rejoin the Spurs due to his bond with Ginobili and the franchise, but I'd imagine Houston would be his #2 with Scola.

So, the Spurs got to be predatory first.

good trade by the Spurs considering they got a 2 way player without giving up anything really. Kurt Thomas is up there Bruce Bowen is done and Alberto really didn't play that much with Drew Gooden being there. Nice Move.
