Some mock draft analysis show Qyntel Woods sliding out of top 10 pick. If the rockets, work it right, it may be possible to take Ming at 1 at C and Qyntel at SF. These are two of the top talents in their respective posisitons and positions that the Rockets need most. I personally would like to see it happen if possible.
It sounds great and I would be thrilled if it happened, but I think it is a very long shot (even though I bit the bullet and put Woods slipping to 15 in my mock draft...one can always hope, right?). Woods is getting a lot of run and the Tracy McGrady comparisons (if scouts truly believe they are accurate) would keep most teams from trading down with us if all we were to offer was KT and the #15 pick. I hope I'm wrong on this one!
Well unless we move up from the 15 somehow, I don't see Washington letting Woods slip past them at the 11. They're supposedly pretty high on his talent here in DC.
i want wooods badly also but if he falls outta the top 10 im not willing to send kenny thomas and our #15 pick cus we kenny is a good player and works hard plus we picked him around #15 so it wouldnt really make sense to send 2 #15 picks for like a #13
If the Heat can dump Grant in another deal, what about KT + #15 to Miami for the #10 pick (plus fodder on both sides)?
I just don't see Rudy drafting this guy even if he falls to the 15th pick. He goes against everything Rudy likes in a player. He can't shoot, no D, and doesn't seem motivated to get better at anything besides scoring. Another player with a lot of ability that never made it because he can't shoot and lacked the desire is Harold Minor. Minor fell in the draft all the way to the Rockets and we still didn't select him. I see the same thing happing with Woods, probably not falling as far to the Rockets but even if he did we wouldn't select him. Harold Minor -> Baby Jordan -> Bust Qyntel Woods -> Tracy McGraddy -> Bust
There is no way shape or form that we need 3 players who need development. Ming & Griffin are enough for one team. I really would like an experienced 3, but would be happy with a Bostjan Nachbar if we just keep our pick and stay put. The only person I think that can make Qyntel Woods work would be Michael Jordan so I think we should let him try.
Guys Q. Woods will be atleast as good as O. Torres and he'll be cheaper. I think the only way to get him is with a trade with Phoenix for the #9. I think the Rox should try their damndest to move up and get either Hilario, Woods, or Stoudemire at 9. I believe a package including KT, Moochie, and #15 would be enough to get the 9 and filler from Phoenix. Moochie and KT have value and we should use it to improve in areas where improvement is most neccessary, the post and the 3.
Steve Patterson made the right call with Minor. He said he had no use drafting a guard who averaged 1.5 assists in college. I always thought Steve got the raw end of the deal. He was a good basketball GM, fairly sharp, and much better than his father Ray. So what if he wasn't good at marketing. Back then you could clip coupons out of the paper and get 2 seats for $12. When Les took over he fired Steve because they couldnt fill the seats. Years later, Les said looking back he shouldnt have fired him. Patterson built that first Championship team.
UT Baller, you say that Woods would be cheaper that Oscar. Maybe in terms of salary (maybe), but I don't think a lottery pick is cheap. At issue also is what do we lose by picking up a player who will probably take longer to fulfill his potential than Yao. But in Woods' defense, Real Shady, how do you know that Woods has no desire? I've read the question marks concerning his defense, sure, but that may be due at least partly to lack of skill. I don't think it's a given that he doesn't care about defense, just that he sucks at it right now. Other things I've read about Woods to me indicate that he is actually a guy who perseveres and is willing to work on his game. For me, it's less a question of attitude and more a question of whether it's worth waiting on him to develop.
This is the evaluation that Clutch has on him in the Draft forum. I also read something like this on ESPN.com and Nbadraft.net. I just think when names like Jordan or McGrady get thrown around as comparisons the players get overly hyped. What Jordan, McGrady, and Kobe have that most other players do not is the drive to excel. From the sound of most of the scouting reports it doesn't sound like Woods has the desire.
Relativist- history shows that big men take longer to develop then guards/wings, so who is to say how long it will take Woods to develop into a player capable of getting on the floor for 15-20 mins? Also, the quality of coaching he would recieve is head and shoulders above anything he has recieved before. Right now the guy has all the tools to be successful, he just needs a bit of coaching as to how and use those tools. There is a gamble, but the actual TMac started to dominate in flashes his second year, it isn't a stretch to think that Woods would atleast contribute in his second year (I would bet that his timetable isn't far from Yao's in terms of impact).
OT has a reasonable J, plays D, and will likely sign for the league minimum. QW does not play D, J needs work, and and will sign a guaranteed three year contract (which will average more than the league minimum). Developing a J is not a given. Think Bill Willoughby.
Just because Woods is compared to McGrady doesn't mean he'll develop just like him. Basically, every player in the draft is compared to some star or other. If you went by those comparisons, every team would have a Kobe or Tmac. Maybe two. We absolutely don't need any more players who dont' want to play defense. We have a roster full of them now.
