Does this make anyone think that Michael Redd is probably off the books now? I wasn't dying for him, but I'd like the option to be there for us.

We don't do what these other teams have done... at least not yet. The Artest deal was a good deal for both sides (hell, many were saying Sacramento got the better of it right after the trade).

Deals like this and the Gasol deal are such clear salary dumps that we know which team is getting the benefit more than any other else.

Even if we unload McGrady, we're going to be assuming the Bucks role, more than the Spurs role... trading him for trash that we don't want or need... just so we can get equal salary that we will dump.

The problem with the bad teams is that they either use the extra salary unwisely, or they simply pocket it.

yeah, but who knows when mcgrady is going to return for sure? if mcgrady returns relatively early into the season, which could happen because he's working for a new contract, they would end up paying the majority of his contract. the spurs offered the bucks a safe, guaranteed way to save money.

Wow...hell of a trade for the Spurs. If they can stay healthy they can compete with LA for sure.

Morey needs to do something if we want to win a championship. How are we supposed to compete with spurs and lakers without more talent.

Won't happen. This team will surely win 50 games, but I'm sure lingering injuries will keep players sidelined in the playoffs....and with unloading some of their depth, it will hurt them.

I have learned through experience...as long as Pop is the coach, never count the Spurs out.

Their depth will come back once the other three guys get bought out, and return to the Spurs.

Hell they didn't trade anyone really important. Seeing a trade like this go down i hope the rockets are able to do something with another team trying to save some money.

No big deal. The Rockets shouldn't bat an eye. The Rockets w/o their "stars" are the team that gave the Lakers their biggest test.

personally, i would say we performed the same maneuver with artest that the spurs just did. our trade with the kings wasn't that fair. the kings didn't receive salary relief since bj expires at the same time, and donte green wasn't that impressive of a prospect - many players who have scoring explosions in the summer league only to have a unimpressive career later. and since we did well this season, the sk draft pick this year likely won't uncover anyone talented.

one might argue that the spurs didn't even offer draft picks in the trade, but again they offered a level of salary cap relief that the rockets did not offer the kings. it's an unfair trade, yes, but we benefited from this type of trade as well.

Maybe it's just me, but that trade don't scare me much. Richard Jefferson is, in my opinion, a bit overrated and overpaid. He kind of remind me of Jason Richardson (BTW, these two guys tended to get confused for each other in my fantasy leagues during the early 2000s). When Richardson got moved from GSW to CHA, then to PHX, I heard how he was gonna make an impact, but it really didn't turn out to be the case.

I think the Spurs bought themselves very good, but expensive, Manu injury insurance, and that's about it.

Side note: If any of the three Spurs players (Bowen, Oberto, Thomas) get waived by the Bucks, I wouldn't mind Morey picking him up on the cheap.

I am kind of fascinated by the prospect of adding Bowen to the Battier/Artest wing combo. To the calulated Battier and the physical Artest, adding an element of dirty. Wouldn't be bad to buy dirty for something closer to the veteran minimum.

Richard Jefferson is the Shane Battier of offense.

Spurs raped the Bucks on this trade, ugh.

Don't panic! The suns also have big 4, and it didn't work out!

As long as they don't find a Bowen type of player, the spurs' system is dead!

I thought the same thing, Al to the Spurs would make them insanely tough, RJ just gives them an athletic wing who is a softy. I used to like RJ until a few years ago when the Rockets played the Nets and T-Mac went off on him. Most of his energy on defense went to flopping and trying to not to get on a poster rather then moving his feet and harassing his man. That being said, the Spurs should be a much better fastbreak team next year, but what they really needed was a dynamic player who could defend the 4 and create room in the post for Duncan

Meh.. They gave up a lot for one guy. I wonder if this move means a steep cut into Duncan's minutes?

This tells me a few things:

    1. The Rockets have to absolutely re-sign Ron Artest now, in order to stay competitive in the West. We have no choice.
    2. Deals like this can definitely be had for the right price, and you do not have to give up any of your core in order to get it done.
    3. There is probably more to this deal than meets the eye.....there is no way San Antonio gives up their front court depth like this, without getting something (either one of the players in the deal returning, or through another trade) in return.
    4. I could probably have stated this in #2 but I feel it deserves it's own bullet. T-Mac's contract has incredible value for a team that needs the money. T-Mac's contract alone outweighs all three players involved in this deal, and there is no way Morey sits on his hands now. I fully expect the Rockets to gain a significant piece by way of this contract before the season begins.
