leroy420 at first you were all stfu Swoly but now you are all aren't you, emmeffer? Now you're going to be all "but we had 10!" or "but it's the Champs!" or "but at least we scored!" or some crap like that... right? C'mon, man. DEMAND more of the U.S. ... Howard can't be defending those long shots... WIDE OPEN strikers... and the offense can't manufacture a goal... that's not good, man. They better step it up, or Egypt is going to score 5 on them. C'mon, now... I want BALL MOVEMENT and I want BETTER defending. I want that black kid who came in the 2nd half to start instead of Dempsey; he plays with more DESIRE. Dude, I'm sick and tired of this crap.
when italy is on the offensive they are beautiful to watch. the americans will never be a soccer power. it really is sad.
The comeback by Egypt was beautiful. Pretty much their attitude from the 1st half completely changed in the 2nd. They were down 3-1, and they were pretty much just like 'We lost this anyway.. so lets just put on a show'. And they did! It sucks for such a valiant effort to go to waste over a dumb mistake such as a handball, but hopefully Egypt will bounce back and learn from its mistakes! Next game is USA vs Egypt I believe? Watch out USA
You are right. That was a bull RED card. It only would merit a cautionary yellow. We all agree, we think. It may look not look vicious to us on replay, but the ref doesn't have the privilege of the instant replay. Let him have that one. What can you tell me about that own goal? If you read the rulebook, you would have disregarded the OFFSIDEs. The DEFENDER hit the ball, not the offensive player. That was clearly a score for ITALY called off. Agree or no? U.S. would have still lost because Jozy doesn't know how to shoot from outside the box and passed the ball back to the defense instead of Dempsey. Put that other kid Davies (or Davis?) in from the get-go, I bet you he scores twice.
B.S. some of the best players in the world are not premier athletes. Not like the 2 goal scorer Rossi, the super human athletic freak that is 5'7" and 160lbs. What do they feed them in NJ!!!
Rossi is a sorry POS. The reason it was called is that even though the Italian didn't touch the ball he influenced what the defender did so he was involved in the play.
wow sore loser.... keep in mind the same ref who showed the red called the penalty. you want to pick and choose the calls now?? that penaltly was soft too. also that kid from jersey had a lot of help from Pirlo. plus if were not for howard's amazing saves it could have been 5 or 6 for the italians. the better team won, no shame in that.
Read the rule again. It does not say anything about the ball touching the defender. That is such a huge misconception. It's all about the position of the offsides player when the ball was played. The position of that player AT THE MOMENT THE BALL WAS PLAYED is all that matters. The rest is at the referee's discretion to call it if the player was or wasn't involved in the play. In this case, was the Italian forward a part of the play? Clearly he was. If he wasn't there, Bornstein doesn't have to slide in to attempt the clear. Since the offensive player was clearly part of the play and was in an offsides position when the ball was played, it has to be called off. [EDIT] Here's a simple video from the FIFA site. Check the "Active Play section that explains quite clearly why the call was the right one... Law 11 - Offsides Jozy was terrible. Yes, he won the penalty with a great move. But that passing up of a shot in the first was a huge mistake. You are an international forward, SHOOT THE F***ING BALL!.
I disagree. Altidore clearly beat the defender to the inside and the defender clearly held him. Was there a little accentuation on the foul? Sure there was. But there was also little argument from the Italians as to whether it was the right call or not. I'm not saying the better team didn't win. Clearly Italy is a better team. They're the freaking defending World Cup champs. But, I'd like to think that with 11, the US would have had a better result...maybe.
The guy BEHIND the defense had NOTHING TO DO with the score. Whether the guy was ONSIDE or NOT ONSIDE, the U.S. scored on themselves... instead of on the other goal. Yes, or no? LOL! How come the U.S. didn't beat Italy when it was 11 on 11? Meh, I guess the U.S. is up there so the rest of the teams can practice?!?!? I don't want that!
It doesn't matter who did what with the ball. When it was played into the center, the Italian was offsides and his presence affected the play. Check the link I just posted to the actual rule from FIFA...not the one made up by people who don't really know the rules. Not trying to be a jerk, but it's the same crap I hear every game I play or ref. It's even more of a shame when the ref's themselves don't know the correct call. This is probably the biggest misconception in all of soccer...that and the handball rule. It has nothing to do with intent, damnit! It's all about advantage.
