The recent "what to do in Houston" thread got me thinking...

I'm 40 years old and a native Houstonian. I was a Boy Scout (almost made Eagle - missed it by 4 merit badges). I enjoy camping and the outdoors.

    but ya know what?

I've never been to Lake Houston.
    ...or Lake Livingston
    ...or Lake Conroe
    ...or Padre Island

I'd like to take my family out on camping trips, canoeing, beach.... I dunno...

What are your favorite places for outdoors activities in Texas?

Might be a little too simple, but, I enjoy fishing at San Luis Pass (especially around October) and at one of the piers in Galveston on the seawall.

Sticky nights this time of year, though.

Forgot to mention that I've been to Lake Conroe when I was younger and it was nice, very peaceful and makes for good family times. Padre Island is always a nice choice, water is less brown than it is here in Galveston, and the beach is cleaner (less seaweed and stuff).

yes never much wind at that lake. thats why you do not see many sailboats at the marinas. besides that its a nice lake.

Actual cold water to in comparison to the warm water in Galveston. It's much worth the drive IMHO if you actually want to spend time on the beach and don't do so very often. Careful on the drive down though, a couple of the little towns right before South Padre are speed traps.

Livingston has some pretty good bass fishing if you go out in a boat off some of the points or along the old sunken highway.

I used to go down to Texana a lot. It's just south of Ganado. Right time of the year you can catch a lot of Crappie off the piers or along the shore.

I haven't lived in Texas for about 20 years, but when I was there my favorite outdoor activities were-

-surfing in Surfside, Galveston, Matagorda Island

-canoeing, tubing on the Guadalupe and other hill country rivers

-swimming in hill country lakes/rivers/Barton Springs

    -bbqing anywhere

    -sitting outside drinking beer

In Austin, we try to do the Botanical Gardens, Nature Center, Umlauf Gardens, Town Lake, and other Zilker area stuff at least once a month. Bob Bullock (w/IMAX), LBJ, and other museums are on a regular rotation.

The Children's Museum and then Spaghetti Warehouse is always a treat for my youngest. He loves to sit in the trolley. Food is nothing special but not bad.

Swimming at the neighborhood pool, or one of the other local area swimming parks. These little neighborhood mini-waterparks that are popping up are pretty cool.

We like to camp but camping in this heat is pretty miserable.

Check the papers for free activities weekly and in any larger metro area you can find tons of fun stuff to do for free.

Lake trips FTW. Went to Lake Conroe on Saturday, and Lake Travis in October... Best memories of the the past year came from these trips... Take some friends, rent a boat and a jetski, and enjoy.
