Shootout leaves deputy and 2 suspects dead, mother and baby wounded

    Copyright 2002 Houston Chronicle

A 29-year-old Harris County sheriff's deputy has been killed in a shootout that left two suspects dead and a
woman and infant seriously wounded after a home invasion by gang members early this morning.

The shooting occurred just before 2 a.m., after the Sheriff's Department answered a call from a young girl
who said men with guns had broken into her grandmother's northeast Harris County home near Havner and
Foy and were attacking her mother. The child apparently put a pillow over the telephone so the suspects
would not suspect help was being summoned, but shots were heard during that call, deputies said.

As deputies converged on the victims' home and tried to enter, an exchange of gunfire erupted. Shane Ronald
Bennett, an eight-year veteran of the Sheriff's Department was shot and rushed by helicopter to Memorial
Hermann Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Two suspects were also killed in the shootout, according to Sheriff's Department spokesman Lt. Robert Van
    Pelt.

Inside the house, deputies found that the child's 22-year-old mother and 2-month-old brother had been shot.
Memorial Hermann Hospital said the woman, identified as Rosa de la Garza, had been shot in the ribs and
her baby, Ray, was shot in the hand. Both are in serious condition after undergoing surgery, and there was no
word on whether doctors were able to avoid amputating the infant's hand as hoped.

Sheriff Tommy Thomas praised the dead deputy and said the mother and child probably would have been
killed if deputies had not stormed the house.

"In a situation like this, you've got to go in," he said. "Had they waited outside, maybe he'd be alive, but there
were 10 people in that house at risk."

Soon after the gunfire ended, another gunman was caught driving a van about a half-mile away, deputies
    said.

Officers from several law enforcement agencies are still searching the area for two other suspects who fled
on foot after the shootout. As some officers search door to door on foot, others on horseback, with dogs and
in helicopters are combing a 3-square-mile area that's part woods, part industrial and commercial, part
    residential.

Officers at the scene said the suspects appeared to be members of the Latin Kings gang, whose graffiti
decorate street signs throughout the neighborhood where the shooting took place.

Dozens of neighbors huddled in their yards this morning to watch police armed with assault rifles conduct the
    search.

"I knew there was gangs because of the spray paint everywhere, but I thought it was just kids," said neighbor
Gloria Davila. "I never thought they were this dangerous."

Law enforcement officials conducting the search have set up a command post at nearby Worsham
Elementary School, where summer school is in session and buses were having a hard time getting through.

As word of the deputy's shooting spread, law enforcement officers from around the Houston area gathered at
the hospital to give blood but upon learning of his death stayed to console the deputy's widow. The deputy is
    also survived by 1-1/2-year-old daughter.

    More than likely
the life of an officer is taken more seriously by Policemen
than if you or me were killed

This person may not even make it to triall

I'm so sick of these people. Of course they'll blame society for going out and injuring and killing people, especially kids. I hope they get what they deserve.

I'm not for the death penalty, but I'd kill them myself given the chance.

C'mon now, innocent until proven guilty. Let's make sure the officers entered the residence legally. I know it says a girl called the police, but we need to go through every effort to give these suspects all the proper protections that the constitution calls for. Let's not rush to judgement.

I know that there is no honor amongst thieves, but I heard in some prison documentary that many prisoners do not tolerate these a-holes that harm children...They have obviously resisted arrest, and are obviously dangerous...proper force must be used to catch and take these bastareds into custody. Beat them senseless...and then throw them to the dogs in prison.

Rocket has a point, it is ok for two cops to kill a hispanic american but not ok for two hispanics to kill a cop.

Cops are worthless anyway you put it ,they worry about there own and could care less how they treat civillians.
It was wrong for them to shoot a child ,but cops are all the same crooked ,one way or another.

People should have seen this coming, if the cops would have been convicted for killing that man while he was in their custody then justice would have been served.
But now an officer dies by the hands of two hispanics and now it's important.

Thats the single most stupidest response I have ever read on this site.

A police offer represents the law of this country. Sure, there are some crooked ones. But without cops and law I highly doubt we would even be able to post on this site.

No congress represents the law of this country a cop is a person with a badge who thinks he has more authority than he is supposed to have.

I have seen cops go way beyond their limits and get slaps on the wrist for it. He died in the line of duty he chose that job and he knew the risk.
They will make this cop into a hero by saying he died saving the life of the two victims but in reality the robbers were on their way out after shooting the victims. How the hell is that called a hero?
YES! it is wrong to shoot a child period but cops need to realize as well it is wrong to Torture civillians in custody.

I am sorry but I do not like the way our law system is now, where a policeofficer is allowed to speed through a busy street because they have their lights on,and finding out later they were speeding to get to the nearest Mcdonalds. Inturn the officer speeding kills a civillian while crossing the street because they wanted to speed..but yet the cop and his city back him up saying he was called to an emergency!
Cops get away with too much and it is about time it comes to an end.... Like it or not A hispanic was killed by two cops and now two hispanics have killed an officer.
Which one you think will fry? How fair is this?:(

Ask the people in NYC who watched cops run into crumbling buildings to help them if they think like you do. Ask those who know cops...know their families...and know the risks these guys take all the time. There is no indication this deputy did anything wrong at all, as far as I understand it so far. You callously write off his death...that's just sad.

You're making HUGE generalizations about the police in general because you dislike what some did. I hope you don't need them to come bail your ass out of trouble tonight...

Do not worry about that, this is a big problem with police and it is about time it is addressed..I knew someone would bring up the WTC...Blame your country for that incident. United states killed those men in the line of duty by keeping the info they had a secret about the terrorist....

I do not get myself into a situation where I need my "ass" bailed out of trouble. I speak by experience
My little cousin was hit by a policeofficer because he was speeding what he said was an emergency call but later found out no such record of an report. But did this cop get any jail time? HELL NO slap on the wrist...

I think some would agree with me an EYE FOR EYE this was bound to happen!

I find Troy's rant only a little more surprising than some of the vengeance some people are expressing toward these gang members. Putting innocent till proven guilty aside, what they've done isn't terribly atrocious. They've shot 3 people, killing one. Do you call for blood every time a single person dies? Does this justify police brutality? Torture? Prison rape? Subversion of the judicial system? That's what you're calling for. It's sick. Every time I get pissed off at my representatives in government, I need to remember the posters in this board and what they would do if I ever had the misfortune to see them in a legislative office and thank my lucky stars.

On a slightly different subject, the article said the mother and child were shot, but never said who shot them. Considering the child was shot in the hand, I would guess that he, and perhaps his mother, were shot in the exchange of gunfire and could possibly have been hit by police, not gang, bullets.

I dunno what to do if either my brother or my dad where killed in the line of duty, and im gunna be a cop one day and it would be a great honor to personally to take out all the cop killers in the world......

The mob mentaility is pretty common in situations like this. It is hard to see past the blinding emotions. That's why we have a justice system in the first place. Otherwise it would be:

"There's no justice like angry mob justice." :)

    or

"A person is smart. People are dumb panicky dangerous animals and you know it."

Separating the event from the emotion is a requirement to see that justice is actually done. Without that detachment, we'd send even more innocent people to prison than we likely already do.

Latin Kings? They serious? I grew up knowing guys in that gang but all they were all real young guys just spray painting the side of Traders Village, (which I had to clean off). Sounds like they've grown up, physically but not mentally.
