According to Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals are eyeing Astros shortstop Miguel Tejada.
Tejada could fill in at shortstop or third base for the Cardinals, and would provide a solid bat behind Albert Pujols. It's doubtful that a deal is close, but it seems like a good fit. The 35-year-old infielder is batting .355/.378/.521 this season with six home runs and 33 RBI in 234 at-bats. He's owed $13 million for the remainder of '09 and is a free agent in 2010.

The Cardinals have expanded their search for an additional hitter to include Houston Astros shortstop Miguel Tejada. Tejada fits the profile of what the Cardinals are seeking — an offensive deterrent capable of playing multiple positions. The Astros are experiencing financial problems and could part with a player owed $13 million this season. Tejada entered Wednesday leading the NL in batting with a .357 average and 21 doubles. He ranked third in the league with a .354 average against righthanded pitching. ... Khalil Greene managed three hits Wednesday night in his second game on a rehab assignment with the Memphis Redbirds.

Im all for trading Tejada and get something for him but to our division rivals???

Meh...I don't really care if it is a trade with division rivals when this team is clearly far away from rivaling anything other than 3rd or 4th place for some time. If he makes the Cards better, it will likely be for one year, maybe two. In that time frame the Astros won't have much hope of contending anyway.

in a down year for the stros when we are very unlikely to compete for the division crown anyway.. i'd be cool with sending him to the cards if they had the best return package out there.

esp. considering that the cards aren't gonna re-sign him, so he won't kill us in the future.

If it gets us some young talent than do it.

Heaven knows we need as much as we can get.

The Astros will not be contenders for a couple of years. The farm needs som talent. Do it.

I have a feeling the cards will play the "im taking this much salary off your books" play and we end up with some "C" players

if we get some prospects that are worth it lets do it...otherwise its just a salary dump

Why not? He's a free agent after this season and it's not like we're going to be competing with St. Louis for a playoff spot this season.

exactly right. if this isn't about getting some REAL prospects, i'd rather they not trade him. i'd rather enjoy watching him play as a fan then just see him given away in a salary dump.

I'd like to get something for Miggy since it's unlikely we will re-sign him..we need to rebuild and this will help

The more teams that show interest, the higher it drives the price up. If they offer the best package of prospects, so be it.

I hope another dozen teams show interest before the deadline.

i don't see the current league leader in hitting not fetch a decent prospect in a trade, even if it's just a rental.

we gave up john buck (and dotel) for the beltran rental, and while his salary was considerably lower, he was less of a proven commodity than tejada.

Beltran was an all-star, gold-glove player in the prime of his career who had improved each year in the majors. Tejada is a 36yr old bad defensive SS who's having a career year in batting average and OPS after a couple of very sub-par years.

I think the Astros expected more out of Beltran than the Cards would be expecting out of Tejada.

right, but they would be getting him during his career year. also, let's not forget that we gave up carlos guillen and freddy garcia for a randy johnson rental.

i'm just saying, if we trade him, i guarantee we'll be getting at least a decent prospect in return.
