People often forget the fact that Yao worked too hard during the regular reason in order to give the Rockets team a chance to get in the playoffs. It was not just the minutes that he played but the way he played. If he only played 90% of his capacity on many nights, I am sure that he would have much fewer injuries. People also forget that this guy has not had a summer break for many years. This not only put a lot of stress on his body, but also prevents him from spending times improving his skills. Everybody should know that the summer is the most critical time for a professional baller to recharge and retool. Can you name a single American basketball player who has gone through what Yao has? Granted, Yao is one of the first Chinese players who ever play in NBA so nothing is expected to be easy. His achievement and performance has already wildly exceeded my expectation given these circumstances. He still has some good years left in him. Given that now he can take breaks in summer to rest and improve, I will expect him to perform even better in the years to come.
So since you think a website said so it's automatically true? Oh just like you saying LeBron is better than Larry Bird that's automatically true? It's an opinion, Jon Barry said Yao and since he is right most of the time I am right and you are wrong. Go back to LeBron > God
Pure and simple: The NBA is trying to raise Howard and hype him as the next Shaq. Truth is he'll never even be as good athletically (given Shaq's weight and strength), let alone skill-wise. Yao's a skilled center but he is not very athletic. For me I take the hard-working over the simply-gifted, but that's jut me. Oh and I think Howard has the ugliest post-moves when he is not dunking.
I said this before just to let the Yao haters appreciate a tiny little bit Yao's effort and heart. But it ended up that I was called idiot and claimed YOF. Let me see what you will get from this post.
If there is a poll for who is the most overvalued player or biggest quitter. I guess it would be T_MAC
I don't think Yao need to play like Howard do. They are different styles. Yao doesn't need to dunk too much for he has good shooting percentage. More over, he is not strong as Howard, it is hard for him to dunk like that, and it will bring him more injury if play like that. Yao is doing great job, what we need for Rox is getting 3 pointers outside, then Yao can play easier with more space and less double/tipple defense.
I agree, I like Howard but aside from being very young (23 or 24), the only big man playing center of note in the Eastern conference and very impressive dunks, he isn't nearly as great as people are hyping him to be. This series has pretty much exposed the fact that he has no offensive "Go-to" moves when confronted against another center of actual substance and his defensive game while very good is more effort then skill right now. He may one day develop into a great player but those dubbing him the best center in the NBA right now are off base, he provides a lot for his team but compared to Yao or even his contemporary Al Jefferson bring to their teams on both sides of the court, all he really has above them maybe more impressive dunks and the blessing of a younger healthier body.
What happened WeMissDeke.... suddenly starting to ignore my last post... you're pathetic... I've tried to reason with you... nope.... I apologized nope.... nothing seems to work with you.
ur probably right. tmac would lead that poll if you make it this year. what's your point? i just posted what real GMs think. saying yao's the 2nd best center is saying he sucks. it's very arguable.
people might call you out on that b/c if someone posted a link that disagrees with what you post, you bring up tracy as a counter.
NOBODY is saying he's great. kareem called him out today for being "predictable on offense." he's great COMPARED to today's centers. people on this board need to get that.
The above poster refers to this thread, which I created over a month ago, and which has nothing to do with Dwight Howard or Yao Ming. Anyone can click the link, review my posts, and confirm I never made that argument. The above poster is too cowardly to acknowledge this, and too shameless to stop repeating the lie. His pattern is consistent. If he disagrees with you, he won't argue the point honestly. Instead, he resorts to cheap tactics to try to discredit others (e.g. calling them a "T-Mac Only Fan", or in my case, claiming all I do is "ride Hollinger" and that my credibility is shot because I said "LeBron is better than Bird" or think "LeBron > God"). And its also clear the poster doesn't even understand what he's disagreeing with. In his little world, there are only two views: "Yao > Dwight" or "Dwight > Yao". I must be in the latter category, and moreover I must be as stubborn about it as he is in his view. Hence, when NBA.com reports that a majority of GMs preferred Dwight Howard over Yao Ming, I must automatically consider it to be the case. Nevermind that I never expressed that view, and that I said that reasonable, informed people can take either over the other. No, I have to be a zealot, as he is clearly is.
you're responding to a zealot too durvasa. just let it go. if they can't just accept that poll is NOT our opinions, there's nothing we can do.
Durvasa, sometimes u have to realize when you're talking to kids that can't think logically. That wemissdeke dude is probably some 15 yr old kid and can't even shave. Even with his limitations, I bet u can't find 5 gms that will take yao over howard. I remember when amare was getting the praise and people kept saying, what if he had a knee injury. We he had microfracture and it helped him become a great midrange shooter and free throw shooter. Dwight doesn't have to turn into a jump shooter to be effective in the post, he just needs to work on his in the lane jump hooks. I like the fact everything he does is going toward the rim putting pressure on the defense. Once he gets his jump hooks like kevin willis, we're looking at 25ppg 14 rebs 3 blks. Then what will people say. His ball of clay is so massive and his work ethic is so good already, anyone with any eyeballs can see he's on his way to domination. 1st team all nba voted on by coaches and gm's should mean something. I guess this raggedy debate will continue on I guess.
Yep. Yao Ming is better. I'm sorry I don't listen to your constant advanced stats of PER, Effiency or whatever stupid stat you use. I watch the game, and what I see is how I determine things. I don't look at the stats and boxscore constantly like you and Hollinger. I actually have opinions on things.
Durvasa... don't waste your time with this guy... he'll start questioning whether or not you're a Rockets fan or not or if you live in Houston or something ridiculous along those lines...
I came into this thread specifically to say Howard just looks like an over-glorified Kevin Willis to me, to a rich man's Joey Dorsey sometimes on offense. but I just saw Willis get mentioned. And it was correctly suggested that Howard need to get his offense UP to Willis's. But Kevin Willis was a good player, he'd be a top 5 center in today's league so its not much of "putdown". Since Yao is just an over-glorified Rik Smits himself. Its something he can build on. Though really that doesnt seem like much of a move to me lol, with his athleticism no one's gonna block that. Its a credit to his foot speed cuz guys like Bynum Andrew Bogut arent even doing much of that.
Shroopy, I brought up kevin willis jump hook for a reason. No one will ever have the post game of Dream or Kareem. Moses didn't have a goto move, but he was a great player. I know u have, but dream always said everything started off his jump hook. Everything! As good as ewing and robinson was, what was their goto move? That same sweeping, step through move Howard is trying was Ewing's goto move. Robinson didnnt have a goto move a nd was more comfortable at the high post with a jumper or dribble drive. Howard with his brute and quickness only needs to get comfortable with the step in jump hook and reverse pivot left hand. Also, hitting his free thrwos at a 70% clip is needed. That's not a bad thing to have on your menu. Willis in this age would be top 3-5 vs lower in his era. If howard adds the kevin willis ability to shoot the jump hook, hang it up. His ability to explode for the next 7 yrs or so will allow him to just rise and shoot over people.I don't get it when people deny his production already. In the finals, he's avg 17-15 and people say he's struggling. Well, give me that and I can make up the rest anyday.
