I have a presentation to put together for the advantages/disadvantages of having Fridays off (or every other Friday). It’s for an engineering company who manufactures their own products on the same site. The majority of the company is in favor of having Fridays off (or every other Friday), and I’ve been designated to put the presentation together. Can anyone help me out? I’ve done research on the general advantages as well as how it would directly help the company. I wanted to see if there were any other views/advantages on the topic. Just about every engineering company has every other Friday off or shorter work weeks. Fridays are VERY slow here and could save the company money by having them off. Thanks in advance
i've got 9/80 and wouldn't take a job that wasn't. well, i'm in the engineering, oil and gas industry too. some pts that come to mind: 1) better home-work life balance for employees to run errands or go on vacations without taking a day off, which makes for happier employees 2) good selling point while hiring. if another job was identical and had 9/80, they would pick that company and not yours 3) traffic for all of Houston would benefit too with fewer drivers 4) drivers save money on gas for a trip to/from work once every 2 wks
i'd think if you could turn it into a presentation on a flex schedule as opposed to 9/80 or whatever, you can highlight those advantages even moreso. If Fridays are usually slow (but not always), people can work extra when needed during the week, take Fridays off when there's nothing going on, but work the Fridays when it's necessary (or work half-days if that's all that's needed) Personally, I love the flex schedule I have.. just have to get my work done and get at least 80 in over 2 weeks. The only thing better from a personal standpoint would be to extend it to 160 over 4 or 320 over 8, but that can get out of hand quickly if you're not managing yourself well.
I'll play devil's avocado here and throw out some potential negatives: 1. Will the office be completely closed on Friday? If so, you could lose potential business. 2. Will there be exceptions? For example, if a hot project is coming due, will folks then be forced to work on a particular Friday? If so, how will those hours be handled - OT, comp time, tough luck time, etc? 3. Will it be elective or forced? Some folks may prefer 5 x 8 rather than 4 x 10 due to child care issues, personal reasons, etc.
At my old job I worked 9/80 and paychecks were every 2 weeks. It was good because every Friday I'd either get an off day or a payday. And because it was a payday I was a bit more focused and more worked harder to not leave any projects hanging over the weekend.
1. Projects/Purchase Orders intake is significantly lower on Fridays. Since most engineering and oil/gas companies are off on Fridays, the business slows down for us. We work full days on Fridays. 2. There's always exceptions. The company is small and full of hard workers. If projects need to be done, people can volunteer for the extra hours. Of course, it'll have to be approved by the president of the company. We've already had big projects that people volunteered outrageous hours for. This should be an easy and more organized transition. 3. Probably forced. The majority is on board with the shorter work week anyway. Everyone gets upbeat from Wednesday to Friday. That's because the weekend is coming. Productivity is higher...you can tell by everyone's attitude during the second half of the week.
at my old company, a guy opted not to take the 9/80 and did the regular 5/8. it was an option. also, on a team, it'd be divided...some on the A schedule and some on the B so all fridays are covered in case any issues come up. so usu, fridays are good days to get a lot done at work b/c it's quiet with much fewer interruptions.
Cost savings on energy and water for the company since they are only running at full power and full staff 4 days a week.
we work 9 hrs Mon-Thurs and 4 hrs on Fridays.. i love it.. get the weekend started early and it helps out with hangovers after thursdays night out.. also in the oil and gas industry.. enclave parkway biatches
True, but its a reasonable compromise depending on the industry. People who have 30+ minutes commutes wouldnt want to drive to the next county just for a small half day understandably...Me with a short commute I could sure use at least a half-day. I'm thinking of suggesting this to my company
