^^ I was about to bemoan the current state of our educational system, but then realized that you must be joking, as all teachers in high school play movies when they take their extended smoke breaks, and one of those movies by this point in your educational career had to have been Saving Private Ryan. This is D-Day (warning: NSFW, though deserving of a national holiday or two): Spoiler This thread started out as a staid, sober reflection on the anniversary of the day when Allied forces landed at Normandy to begin the retaking of Europe from Nazi Germany, and the many lives lost on that day and afterwards, but then the Internet grammar police showed up. Invoking Godwin's law, the Internet Grammar Nazis outflanked us.
I actually think it's a legitimate debate about military strategy and the Russian's role in the operation (or lack thereof).
I think my original point has been lost. I was pointing out that it took the combined efforts of the Big Three to defeat the Nazis to illustrate how strong of an enemy they were. The comparison was not me saying the Soviets played any role in the success of D-Day, nor about the actual military tactics involved. I am not even saying the efforts between the Commonwealth/US and Soviets were coordinated... I was trying to show how amazing the D-Day invasion really was...
I am just making fun of someone trying to front like he has military knowledge since he watched Band of Brothers. He is the one posting huge maps which I guess were supposed to prove something.
I hate the fact that it is technically a mini-series. It is a movie, just really long. The budget was huge. Blu-ray box FTW!
I knew what he meant. And technically, flank can mean a side of anything. I have to agree with the others, you are being a little anal in this instance. Also, watched a really good History Channel docummentary on the D-Day invasion yesterday. You really got a good feel for the scope and intricacies of the entire operation. It got me wondering what were the best similar documentaries about the war in the Pacific. Any reccomendations?
I saw a D-Day documentary on late Saturday night and then they showed a Pearl Harbor documentary right after that was pretty good. It was about 3 or 4 am by the time it was finished.
The pic in the OP is just incredible. It's just a quick snapshot, but there is so much to take in. I could literally stare at it for hours. What's going through the minds of those guys right when that pic was taken? What are they looking at? How many of them survived? Do they have any idea what's in store for them when that ramp drops? It is just now hitting them what they're in for? I loved Band of Brothers, but that picture tells more of a story than the whole mini-series ever could.
Truly amazing and historical event that we are still learning more about. I posted an article a few days ago about a very little known battle where the Germans launched a devestating attack on a live D-Day practice. 749 men died in that but it provided valuable information for the actual D-Day attack. That event though was covered up for decades with families of those who died not told how their loved ones died. http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=170072
He was trying to sound more informed by using a more technical term that was incorrect. Western and eastern fronts are the common term. Disagree if you wish, but it was obvious he was trying to pwn me or something. Check out his maps.
no one cares about the term he used except you. stop derailing an honorary thread because of semantics. get over it.
