My girl's Philips PMC7230 30 GB media player just died or actually somebody was careless with it and it is now split open. RIP Anyway, I ordered an Archos 605 WiFi 30 GB Media Player as a replacement. If I remember correctly, somebody recommended this brand before on this board. If I am mistaken, I was wondering if anybody has used this brand before? If so, what are your feelings about the brand? Is it good? I thought the price was good for what it does and add to the fact it has WiFi and touch screen. So, anybody had any experience with these players?
i hope you found this deal http://www.1saleaday.com/ thinking about picking it up myself for an early bday gift
That's exactly where I ordered it from. With less than 2 hours left I decided to order it and get reviews on the company's players here later. Like I said, I think somebody recommended them before but I was not sure. After reading CNET's review here http://reviews.cnet.com/portable-video-players-pvps/archos-605-wifi-30gb/4505-6499_7-32477556.html I decided to go ahead with the order.
crap, didn't know that it was a hour left, thought it was 1 day and 13 hours left, thanks for the heads up, need to decide in the next hour its either this, or my cousins was going to sell me his 30 gig U2 Red/Black Ipod EDIT: wait, looking at the video, u have to pay for the browser? that right there might be my que not to buy it
Yeah I had the AV500. Thing was a complete beast. The new models don't have line in recording, which make them a bit less appealing, but for watching videos there is no better than an Archos. The screen is stunning on all their products. I think the only gripe I have with them is that the customer service was a bit lackadaisical. I think the battery died or something and it took forever to get it replaced. It might have been just a one time thing though.. But honestly, right now why would you get anything other than an Ipod Touch?
I have the 705 and have been pleased. I am able to transfer Dish network shows (those not recorded in HD) to it which is great for trips. You can't transfer some of the premium channels (HBO, Showtime, etc.), but I have done some of the other premium movie channels. I also have copied movies to it from DVDs as well. Solid product. My only complaint was I had to buy a special cable from Archos to connect it to a TV, so don;t waste a lot of time trying to get a regular cable to connect.
had that exact model since october of 07. Has served me well. I can answer specific questions if you want.
I am probably the guy who recommended Archos. I have the 604wifi and the Archos 5. I think its the best media player, no iTunes to deal with, just drag and drop. The screen is big and sharp.
To each his own, man. To all of you in here, if you're ever interested in an iPod, feel free to ask me any questions. Or stop by the Houston Galleria Apple Store.
Archos is much better than any of the apple products...it just simply trumps it in every way. People just go after apple crap when it comes to mp3 players b/c its the "thing" to do, but archos can do everything that these apple mp3 players can, and it can do it better. You won't regret your purchase
Thats the catch. Archos is better, cheaper, but usually they are big. But you also get that huge screen. I'd just get an 8-12GB mp3 player and a 120GB Archos and it would still probably come in cheaper than getting an iPod.
I have an Ipod Touch that I received around 07 Christmas. One of my friend also got a Touch around the same time. Both of our Ipods' battery is extremely low. It was full bar last night before I slept. I put it on lock. Fast forward to this morning, the battery was out! Now the 1 year warranty is gone.... I might have to go ahead and buy an Archos, unless there is some free battery replacement.... Do you know what I can do with my iPod?
My phone actually doubles as an mp3 player and it has 2 GB now, which I think is plenty, but it can expand to 8 GB. I'm going to use the Archos in the car via auxiliary connection to have my entire music collection with me wherever I go as well as other traveling.
I got the 605wifi 80gb when it first came out. One of the big fears before I bought it was that a lot of people had complained about the quality of the audio. But I have not had any problem with the audio, it is just fine. I have had to have it replaced once (thank God it was still in warranty) and Archos took care of that just fine. There was a lot made of the wifi capabilities, and browsing, etc. But with it being only wifi, this means your browsing is realistically limited to wifi hotspots where you don't have a computer. And for me, it's just not that often. If I traveled a lot, and HAD to browse the internet a lot, then I can see how it would be something that would get used more. As an audio player, it has nice bells and whistles, and it sounds fine, but it really is not something I would want to carry around in my pocket just so I could listen to some music. Widgets? Again, cool enough, but the processor is not zippy enough to really shine there, but again, if you NEED something like that and don't have a Blackberry or something, then they work fine. No, this little baby is for movies. Lots and lots of movies. I cart this thing around with me everywhere, and usually on 'new release Tuesdays' I have already, by the end of the day, hit the Redbox and then converted the latest whatever down onto it. Great way to keep up with movies and not have to sit down and dedicate 2 hours in a night. I have over 60 movies on it at the moment, personal faves that I would want with me when I am stranded on that mythical desert island, and whatever new that strikes my fancy. Nothing out there at the time this thing came out could compete. As a movie device, it is still without peer. Even now, I pull this out while waiting at a restaurant or something and people actually still come up to me amazed and say 'What is that??' People carrying their IPod Touches and their Iphones.. LOL Obviously it is great for viewing photos as well. In fact, people spend a lot on 'digital picture frames', but this thing can just prop up on the desk and show your photos all day long, interesting transitions as well. Get the DVR cradle if you want to get tv and movies straight into it, and you can even use it as a DVR, *sort of*. One warning though, if you get that, or one of the other chargers (instead of using the slow-a$$ USB charging) then do NOT leave this thing on the charger for long extended periods. I am convinced that that is why my first one basically blew up. Something on the inside burned up and I believe it was because it somehow overheated sitting on the charger. When it is fully charged, take it off unless you are using it. Anyway, I have been overall very happy with mine. Enjoy!
Unless you purchased AppleCare in the first year, there's not a lot. But I can give you some tips to help extend your iPod Touch's battery life. The battery life is quite short if you leave Push on for your email. As a general, the more your processor has to work, the more battery it's going to eat. Also, anything that leaves the screen on for extended periods of time is not going to help. Try turning your screen brightness down as well. You can also make a Genius bar appointment at your closest Apple Store. Go to www.apple.com/retail/ to find the closest store. While they might not have a free fix, they will be able to tell you if something is abnormally wrong. And since they don't charge for diagnostic support, the only thing it'll cost you is about 20 minutes. I've had mixes results with all electronics with bar indicators of battery. My PSP, for example, will say it has a full bar when other programs indicate it's only at 70-75%. I really don't know what to say to make things better. I have an iPod Classic and an iPod Shuffle. I only charge them both about once a week.
