Actually the stats given by those Chinese websites are inaccurate... they assumed every player played a full season (22 games before this season and 24 games for the 2001-02 season)

I have done some intense research on the ChBA player stats, here's the regular season stats for Ming, Zhizhi and Bateer:

    Yao Ming
Season G Min FG% FT% REB AST STL BLK TO PTS
    99-00 22 42.9 .604 .648 15.0 1.8 2.41 5.27 3.3 21.1
    00-01 22 43.9 .665 .799 19.4 2.2 1.59 5.50 4.0 27.1
    01-02 24 41.8 .698 .765 18.5 2.6 1.71 4.83 4.3 29.7

    Wang Zhizhi
Season G Min FG% FT% REB AST STL BLK TO PTS
    99-00 22 35.5 .569 .827 9.7 0.6 2.86 2.73 3.0 26.4
    00-01 20 38.1 .611 .759 12.6 1.8 1.65 1.95 3.8 28.1

    Menke Bateer
Season G Min FG% FT% REB AST STL BLK TO PTS
    99-00 22 44.0 .485 .764 11.9 2.6 1.32 1.77 4.1 23.8
    00-01 21 45.9 .489 .719 14.1 3.1 1.29 1.10 3.6 24.8
    01-02 19 46.7 .493 .667 14.2 2.6 1.21 1.37 3.2 24.3

As you can see, Ming is improving every season...

Wang Zhi Zhi's and Ming's numbers are too close. Scary.

Actually Ming destroys ZhiZhi in rebounds and blocks, which is good, and his FG% is by far the best of the bunch, but what is actually kind of scary was to see that Bateer is averaging 24 points a night over there.

I wouldn't call 6 more rpg and 3 more bpg too close. How much better could his offensive numbers be anyway? :)

It seems that Chinese players are not taking care of the ball well enough... just look at the ast-to-turnover numbers...

Thanks for the information cwww.The scary thing that I found was in 00-01 Wang scored more points in fewer minutes than Ming.

Considering Yao's superior shooting percentages, I'd say Wang was taking more shots or hitting a lot of 3's in order to average more PPG.

He only scored 1 PPG more then Ming. Meanwhile Ming grabbed 7 more boards, had almost 4 bpg more then Wang, shot better from the field by about 5 more percent, shot better from the line, and had about the same amount of steals.

I watched a lot of Bateer games in the US this year, and he could've averaged 15 ppg for Denver this year without taking a lot of shots...

... if the guy had managed to stay out of foul-trouble and play more than 15 minutes or so a game!

In other words, Bateer was able to accumulate 24 points because the game is called (and played) differently there. If Yao Ming has similar problems with foul trouble here, then Yao Ming's numbers will struggle just like Bateer's. But if Yao stays out of trouble, then Bateer's performance in the NBA isn't much of a guide.

This is a consistant problem for every rookie in the NBA, staying out of foul trouble - particularly with big men.

I could see this as a problem for Ming early on but since the NBA wants Ming to succeed I would not be surprised if Ming got more calls called favorably his way then most rookies. The NBA (Stern) is not going to want to see Ming get saddled on the bench in foul trouble and have his play limited because of stupid fouls. Thus I think Ming will not have to go through the many growing pains that younger players have to endure to earn the respect of officials.

Say what you want, but it concerns me that Wang averages 28 points, 13 rebounds, 2 blocks and had a 61% fg
and Bateer's averages are pretty ridiculous as well

Going 24-24 in a game is pretty impressive, but this competition level seems to be far from as high as some claim. There is a guy whose name I cannot remember who is at the Philly mini-camp and has no shot at making the league who had some pretty impressive numbers.

I dont think 70% is amazingly superior to 61%
For all that say Yao is a great passer, look at his assist numbers
Yao played more minutes than Wang and averaged one point more...

Stats don't tell the whole story, but my doubts are increasing

I always thought he would be a bust as a #1, never was on the bandwagon, but all this Ming-loving must have made me delusional....
He's just the world's tallest jumpshooter, full of potential or maybe false hope...

Maybe he's worth taking the chance, I'm not trying to start the hundredth debate, but damn do I wish we just traded for #2 and Curry

I know where you guys are coming from when you say those things because that was my immediate reaction, too. Ming's rebounding numbers and blocks are way better, but if ZhiZhi's 20+ ppg and 12+ rpg translates to what it has in the NBA, and Bateer's translates to what it has, then the difference in scoring and rebounding between Ming and Zhi Zhi isn't really much.

Of course, Ming could shock me and be a far better player than Zhi Zhi. I'm not afraid to admit that I'm still really scared about this draft and the prospects of drafting Yao Ming at #1, because he just seems so unproven. It's just that I can't look at 30 pts/19 rebs per game and automatically say "wow, he's gonna be awesome!". The reason is 2 other guys that had nearly-as-good numbers aren't.

Its true that ZhiZhi and Bateer's numbers in NBA aren't that good but its important to remember they are new in NBA and they might still develop into fine players ... to me their numbers suggest that maybe you shouldn't expect great numbers from Ming from day one but rather that players from China needs time to adjust ...

What strikes me when reading these boards is that many people expect him to contribute from day 1 ... It will be interesting to see how much patience people will have with him if he struggles, like most rookies, for the first few years ...

Ming's game and Wang's game are completely different. Ming's game is closer to Bateer's than Wang's. Someone earlier had posted Ming's projected numbers to be 15/10/3 by comparing him with Bateer and doing mathematical calculations with their numbers from the CBA. I say 15/10/3 is reasonable.

Back to Wang's game. He plays more like a SG or SF on offense. Ming plays like a C (one that can shoot). In the NBA, how many SGs score around 20 points? About 29 because almost every team has a SG that scores around 20 ppg. Now how many Centers score around 20 ppg? About TWO! Dont forget that Wang's playing time was limited to 10 minutes. I'm sure Ming will have more playing time because he plays the game differently.

I've seen you post this trade scenario several times, tozai, in a 'matter-of-fact' sort of way.

Do you know something the rest of us don't, or is this just wishful thinking on your part?

In know this is off-topic, but why would Chicago make this trade, especially in light of Ming, in your opinion, probably being a bust?

You're right! Maybe I should have lowered the number from 20 to 15. But my point is that there are far many more high-scoring players in any one postion than center. This is the same as "there are very few true centers!"

Live-- This is just wishful thinking, but I'm not sure how impossible it really is. I'm sure we could throw in KT or do something to make it work. I remember hearing Doc Rocket AWHILE back just musing about our interest in Curry and ROCKET!!! mentioning Curry in one of his talks of trades with LAC, Chi, & Memphis

Why would Chicago make this trade, especially in light of Ming, in your opinion, probably being a bust?
Because Krause is a moron. He's in love with Ming from all accounts. He has close relations in China and has visited and had much contact. I think organizations in China prefer Yao to play in Chicago, Eric Zhang & other rep are from Chicago, etc. Obviously from recent news it sounds like we will end up getting Ming, but I think this trade is the most sensible and effective one possible.

Could you imagine Curry AND Butler...I don't know if Curry will ever turn out like Shaq, but I've seen him play a lot, even in H.S., and he has the fundamental skills (basically mid-range J) that Shaq lacked along with a baby hook, pretty mobile for huge frame, and soft touch with power...I think he is much more of a sure thing than Yao, and he has been progressing nicely after only one season. Don't look at his season stats because you know rookie stats are misleading for a whole year, but there definitely are some signs. Also, if you saw a picture of him after H.S. alongside a picture of Shaq at LSU, he is already bigger and has said he saw Shaq in the weight room and wants to get that big.
Ok I guess I just went off topic, but WOW, our lineup would be nasty with Steve, Cat, Butler, Griffin, and Curry

    I say 15/10/3 is ridiculous.

You say everything is ridiculous. You DO know we're talking about Ming and not Camby, right?
