There is a lot of teamwork involved in baseball. Almost all double plays require teamwork and anticipation and knowing where the fielders will be. Pickoff attempts, throwing out runners, etc. require teamwork. Hit and runs plays require team execution. Realizing who is on base in certain situations require batters to take a pitch to allow a teammate to steal. Knowing you have a catcher who can block a slider in the dirt allows a pitcher to use his full arsenal. Imagine Brad Lidge having to throw to Mitch Meluskey instead of Brad Ausmus. Every single play an outfielder makes on a runner involves teamwork. You have players lining up for cutoffs as well as backing up the respective base. Chemistry is sorely needed with respect to pitching. A starting pitcher is more likely to not cause a stink when he is taken out of a close game if he has confidence in his bullpen teammates.
Well stated. It may certainly be less than American football or basketball, but it is still teamwork. Undeniably so. The whole "individual sport" argument is based on the pitcher-batter confrontation (which, as an aside, conveniently ignores the catcher!). I think this nearly-individual faceoff is something that adds a very unique charm to baseball: each play begins with a (nearly) one-on-one faceoff, but plays out with the a minimum of two other teammates (one other for a K), and often several other teammates, before it is complete. In short, baseball is better.
I still do not disagree with this statement. Baseball is truly the greatest sports. The crack of the wooden bats, the pitcher coming up with an unexpected clutch hit... I love baseball. What? Aluminum bat? DH? Why would you ever call something that stupid baseball.
I'm with you on the DH, and I wish they wouldn't use aluminum bats, but I love me some little league, HS, and college baseball. Love it.
Bring it! Playing at The Rob. I'd be surprised if you showed your face. Keenum will light up the Owls for 400 yards. UH 56, Rice 21
scoreboard, brah Bailiff owns Sumlin - he nearly beat him in the 3rd Ward back in 2007 in a rebuilding year for Rice, and whipped him good at Rice in 2008
Oh that's right - Briles hadn't bolted for the higher profile Baylor program yet. Bailiff has never lost to Sumlin, then
You know....it isn't often that Rice actually gets to run smack on UH in football. I was actually glad for bigtexx that he got to run a little smack last year...course then he ruins the whole swagger effect by biting his nails into the quick about his safety on the UH campus, but I guess he can't help that. There are a lot of variables that could affect the Cougar season...top side we have SOME chance of making BCS noise at least going into the Tech game. Worst case scenario some minor (non-Liberty) bowl against an an Armed Forces Academy or the 7th best team in the SEC or something. One thing I am certain of is we will resume our annual thrashing of Rice this year. And I'll be pleased to give Texxie 3 months (non-political) use of my sig if we don't.
Speaking of coaches who bolted for higher profile programs, Sumlin has never lost to Todd Graham....oops Graham gave Rice the big F U after one year for another conference school bwaaaaaahaha.
For whatever reason, you've always been a Todd Graham fluffer. Trust me when I say this, but us Rice folks are REALLY glad to have Bailiff instead of Todd Graham as our coach. TG wore out his welcome pretty quick.
