Thankfully, I've checked the lion's share of these movies off my list - I came home from college some ten years ago determined to clear the list, and pretty much did. No less than half of the AFI top 100 list is vastly overrated. My General List of Fantastic Movies: Godfather 1 (& 2) Original Star Wars Trilogy Indiana Jones (1 & 3) Pulp Fiction Star Trek 2-3-4 The Matrix Serenity Shawshank Redemption Do the Right Thing Good Will Hunting Taxi Driver (I'm a sucker for 70s NYC) Dazed and Confused The Exorcist Alien & Aliens Back to the Future The Breakfast Club & St Elmo's Fire Glen Gary Glenross (sic) The Usual Suspects A Few Good Men Terminator 2 Animal House Clerks & Mallrats Fight Club Rosemary's Baby & The Omen (original) Bridge Over the River Kwai Kiddie, But Still Great: Mary Poppins Wizard of Oz Princess Bride It's a Wonderful Life Christmas Story (greatest childhood movie ever) Westerns: Magnificent 7 Wild Bunch Man with No Name Trilogy (Fistful Dollars, Few Dollars More, Good-Bad-Ugly) 3:10 to Yuma Watch with Background Reference Material On: Psycho (one of the most overlooked movies of all time - it's a masterpiece that people just watch as a terror flick) Wizard of Oz The Shining Lawrence of Arabia Citizen Kane (yes, it is boring on its own) Chinatown Schindler's List Watch at a Midnight Screening: Rocky Horror Picture Show Titanic doesn't hold up over time. At all. 12 Angry Men is best seen live as a play. One Flew Over Cuckoos Nest is very good, but the book is at least slightly better.
Good thread idea, I was actually thinking about this the other day, and thought about making a thread too, ya beat me to it. Let's see, in no particular order, I have never seen: Shawshank Redemption LA Confidential Memento Raging Bull Goodfellas Chinatown North by Northwest Schindler's List Citizen Kane Big Lebowski Psycho French Connection Deer Hunter Giant Apocalypse Now Godfather 1 & 2 Caveat: Some of these movies I *have* seen, but I was so young, as to either not remember them, or to have no particular impressed memories one way or the other. Apolcalypse Now, Godfather movies, Deer Hunter, French Connection, Chinatown, things like that, I know I have seen them somewhere in the past, but I definitely need to revisit them now that I would be better able to appreciate them. I think the first one I will go for is Giant - my dad loved that movie for some reason, so that will probably be the next one to hit my Netflix queue.
Movies I've never seen and always get "the look" when I tell people this LOL Shawshank Redemption Any Star Wars movie Gone with the Wind Its a Wonderful Life Godfather Caddyshack Animal House Beverly Hills Cop ehh can't think of any more Movies you should watch: American History X Crash Gladiator Finding Nemo (LOLOL) Mistic River Basketball Diaries Sandlot =) Major League =) ok thats enough
Terminator, Terminator 2 , Terminator 3.... and yet I went on and just saw Terminator 4 because it looked cool . Mmm... and Taken.
See if you can find The Coca-Cola Kid (1985). It's one of my favorite "obscure and quirky" flicks. Hilarious, and you get to see Greta Scacchi in her prime, in glorious full frontal nudity. Very few people, sadly, have seen it. Made in Australia and there's no doubt about it. (and I mean that in a good way!)
nice lists emjohn, you mentioned a lot of movies I would have added to my own list of movies everyone should watch. As for more obscure, I recently saw "Brick" starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and it was pretty good. The animated movie Persepolis is also a really good movie.
I worked early today, I have the rest of the day off with nothing to do... I'm popping Raging Bull into the DVD player.
Looks like I still have a lot to accomplish on my 'movies to watch' list.. I've only recently started on the Rocky series...watched I and II so far, Rocky I was definitely an epic and must see for everyone, especially sports fans.
1-4 are great 5 kinda sucks i like 4 the best...prob cause it was my first one to watch when i was a little girl...plus i love the soundtrack =D gotta luv the 80's
Aww... worth seeing just for Ms. Winslet's boobs! Of course, she's shown much more, to better effect, in several other flicks, but I bet that was the first film a lot of teens and tweens, brought by their badgered parents, saw that had nudity.
I know you don't "want it," Lil Pun. It's my small attempt at humor (although the women of France seem to have an unusual jungle down there, from what I've seen! ). It's the off-season. Until there are some serious trade rumors, we seek our amusement where we can find it.
