There are plenty of idiots who go to college, that isn't the point. I doubt a high school diploma would qualify Kobe as one of the smartest players, academically speaking. The fact that he was going to Duke is irrelevant - that was because of his basketball ability, not IQ. (Duke ain't Notre Dame. ) He could very well be a bright guy, but I have a hard time tagging anyone who didn't go to college as "one of the smartest players, academically speaking".
