I am looking to finance a new car for medical school, and all of the quotes for insurance run around 220 per month. This seems pretty high, but I was wondering if that is reasonable or not. Any suggestions?
I think you can get non-owners insurance for like 30-40 bucks a month. Granted it only covers damage if inflicted by you. If someone hits you their insurance will cover it. But this is a bare bones insurance some people take just to be in compliance with the law.
That's about right for comprehensive insurance on a new car for a male under 25. You can increase your deductible to $1000 and take a defensive driving course to drop that $200/month. The defensive driving course is about $30, but you can use the discount for 3 years. I retake the course every time, my discount expires. It's about $10/yr($30 divide by 3 years=$10/yr). The discount is great. If you want it lower, you will have to get a cheaper ride.
Call them all back have them quote you for $1000 deductible and a driver safety course. Then, take the course and sign up with the cheapest guy that you trust will pay on your claim. If you want to save even more money, don't pay monthly. Ask about other payment options such as quarterly, every 6 months, or lump sum. That can save an extra $20-40/year.
Any chance you can be under your parents insurance? I been under my uncles since insurance since I was 16 and I been paying really low rates (although now I'm on liability). As of now I pay $75 a month on All-State. I have a few discounts: driving school, academic achievement (above 3.0 GPA), anti-lock brakes, and passive restraint.
I'm 21, and just got quoted at 115 a month. My car is a 2009 and has 160 miles on it.....granted it's a cheaper new car...I paid about 16995 for it....
I think my problem is that I have been uninsured because I never owned a car/was never on a parent's plan.
It also depends alot on the type of car. If you are getting a sports car or a luxury vehicle, it will cost more to insure. If you get a slow 4-cylinder family car, the rates will be much cheaper.
I think this is why my rates are good. My car is a small, 4 cylinder, that has 6 airbags, AWD, traction control, etc...
