What a nonsensical to be good at, but it's impressive to watch nonetheless. I can see the benefits of hand-eye coordination in young kids. I'm just amazed how something so random spread around the country, and became popular to the point of having world championships or whatever. But sport stacking? Come on, is everything considered a sport now? How about apartment moving? Beer hopping? Teeth brushing?
It's been around. I think that there has been another thread on it outside of this one as well: http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=46390&highlight=stacking
When I saw the thread title I figured this would be something related to building a pyramid of beer cans (a beeramid). Then I saw it was kids stacking cups as a replacement to PE. Now that is pathetic. No wonder we have a bunch of fat azz kids in this country. They should be pegging each other in the face with dodgeballs, not stacking cups.
QFT. There's more to PE than just playing basketball and soccer. I try to hit all the objectives in my curriculum through as many different sports and activities as possible. And cup stacking certainly has valuable components that fit right in with the curriculum. It provides an excellent opportunity to improve hand/eye coordination skills, agility and problem solving abilities. Plus it hooks kids that aren't that good in the traditional sports or those that aren't that enthused about PE. And to make it more physically challenging, I had my older students build the stacks while in push-up position, with their arms fully extended; that was fun.
Little kiddies ain't got nothin on me! I can do the same stuff with beer cups AFTER drinking all the beer out. Beat that hand-eye coordination.
