http://msn.espn.go.com/gen/news/2002/0608/1392628.html Saturday, June 8 James breaks wrist going for dunk in Chicago -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ESPN.com news services CHICAGO -- LeBron James, widely considered the nation's top high school basketball player as a junior and possibly the No. 1 pick in the 2003 NBA draft, was injured Saturday during a tournament basketball game on the Southside of Chicago. James broke his left wrist in two places when he fell after going for a dunk during the Adidas Summer Classic before a packed crowd at a Chicago high school gym. An opponent stood in for a charge, had a change of heart and stepped aside as James clipped him and fell to the court in pain, WGN radio reported. The crowd became unruly, threatening the player involved in the incident, forcing the game to be halted. Doctors at Northwestern Hospital in Evanston, Ill., said James, who appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated earlier this year, will need 6-8 weeks to recover and should be ready for his senior season at Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary high school in Ohio in the fall.
That's kind of weird how such a small little mistake could end a career before it's even started (not that this injury is that serious but it makes you think that a little fall in a different direction would tear tendons and nerves and do far worse damage).
if he were to have a career ending injury during his senior year of high school... could he possibly sue the NBA for not allowing him to enter the draft this year due to age restrictions? That decision would have cost him millions of $$$.... unless he has some insurance, which I'M SURE he must!
Lebron James breaks wrist Lebron James broke his arm last night at a tournament in chicago. he was going up for a dunk and another player undercut him. Pretty guesome, i hope he recovers well
Unfortunately an argument against all of those who argue that a poor kid should always stay in school. Didn't he turn down $9 million to play in Italy? We need some way to sove this problem. Perhaps the NBA should require that highschoolers be provided an hour or two of supervised tutoring per day by their NBA team. Maybe a reduced pay scale for players who don't get their highschool degree, just like in the real job market. I don't know
He better be ready for his senior year at St. Marys, he is going to play one of my citys local teams during the season this coming year, and i wanna go see him.
Not the injury, but a similar play where a guy undercuts him. LeBron calls for a foul, but the ref swallows the whistle: http://www.teamjam.org/lebron_james.htm (click on the picture of him dunking)
That is an injury that typically recovers well. It's one of those knee and ankle injuries that all athletes fear. But, wow, did he really turn down 9 million? Geez, that's a lot of money. A lot of money.
Even if it doesn't heal completely, he can still goto college to recouperate. I remember Stevie Francis saying in an interview how he had some leg injury during high school and he grew four or five inches during that time. And LeBron's injury was at a best possible time.
<i>Is Lebron really worth the hype?</i> I've seen suppos'ed highlight reels of the man and I don't see much flash, flair, or much greater talent out there running the court against the "scrubs" as some fans call the opponents he has been against. I'll wait until he plays 10 year veteran polished players and make some more assumption's after his game at a later time.
BAH! He'll be fine. Elie got undercut and suffered a very similar injury when he was playing with us, and he played for plenty of more games afterwards. Shaq broke BOTH wrists when he was a kid growing up in San Antonio. Lebron will have the entire summer to rest, then he'll have a whole school year to refine his game as he prepares for NBA stardome. If it is his shooting hand, his jumper will probably be rusty for a while, but hopefully there won't be any long term effects. This won't affect his draft status any. I'd bet that he would be the number one overall pick WITH a broken wrist. This might help his game, also. The next time he's in a similar situation, he could go for the simpler shot, rather than the flashy dunk.
